TAG: Holly Jolly Christmas Tag

by - December 16, 2015

So... I wasn't actually tagged to do this, but when I saw it over on makingupashlee's Youtube Channel, I simply could not resist. I mean...  Okay, real talk, I kinda love answering questions. Seriously, sometimes when I'm bored or it's quiet, I imagine what my answer to all kinds of questions would be. Anyone else like that? If not... Oh well, I have announced my weirdness for everyone to read. I'm good with that.

ANYWAY, so I decided to do this tag because it seemed like a lot of fun and I really, really love Christmas. I mean, not quite THIS LEVEL of love... but there's some serious love for Christmas on my end. I mean, clearly enough Christmas love that I knew exactly what clip to look for to demonstrate Christmasjoyoverboard, right? Anyway! I have mad Christmas excitement, so keep reading for my answers to 15 Christmassy questions!

THE HOLLY JOLLY CHRISTMAS TAG

1. Do you start your Christmas shopping on Black Friday or wait until the last minute?
I always plan to start really early... and then Christmas comes closer and closer and I'm running around like a crazy chicken trying to get my gifts finished. For example, as I write this it's 9 days until Christmas and I still need to get gifts for both of my parents, my stepmom, both of my brothers, and my boyfriend's nieces. Ahhhhhh!

2. If you could be in any Christmas movie what would it be?
THE SANTA CLAUSE. No seriously. Maybe it's the sparkle on the elves faces or that I literally HAVE to watch that movie ever year or it doesn't feel like Christmas, but I absolutely love those movies - the first and second ones, not huge on the third one. A runner up would be Home Alone, because I always wanted to be in that movie when I was a kid.

3. Which do you like better: Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
For me, it's Christmas eve. Ever since I was little, my mom's family (of Icelandic descent) has done the big Christmas celebration of Christmas eve... and I'll tell you about the traditions in Question #8!

4. When does your family put up your Christmas tree and who decorates it?
Now that I live with my boyfriend - who hadn't put up a tree in the 7 years since he'd moved out of his mom's - I insist that we put up the tree together and share an eggnog and rum while we do it and then watch a Christmas movie. I suspect it's only because he loves me that he actually indulges me on this.

The answer to #9 performing #4!

5. White lights or colored lights?
I'm a sucker for white lights, because I love the way that they glow off the ornaments. I'm one of those people who likes to have a curated tree.

6. Are you guilty of peeking at your presents or do you like the surprise?
I love the surprise. If I know what I'm getting for Christmas, it takes some of the excitement off. That said, I'm also the type of person who reads the last page of a book first, so it's pretty difficult for me to keep from trying to guess.

7. Would you rather live in a gingerbread house or in Santa's Workshop?
Contrary to my answer of wanting to be in The Santa Clause, I'd choose a gingerbread house because it would be ridiculously quaint and cozy and would permanently smell like gingerbread cookies and candy. That sounds heavenly.

8. Tell us your Christmas Eve traditions!
Our Christmas Eve party in my family is pretty rife with traditions. We always sing the 12 days of Christmas together, complete with assigning a different day to individuals or groups of people so that we have to go around the room and each sing our line - which is both the ultimate in cheesy, hilarious and heartwarming. We also always read aloud about the jólasveinar, which are the mischievous Icelandic Yule Lads who cause trouble and commit minor robbery on the nights leading up to Christmas. And then of course there are all the foods - which absolutely must include pönnukökur (basically Icelandic crepes rolled with cinnamon sugar) and vinarterta (the yummiest cake made with prunes of LIFE). Our other tradition was always to open one present on Christmas Eve. Now that me and my cousins are all grown, our whole family does a Secret Santa that we draw for at Thanksgiving so everyone has their gift to open. Seriously... Our Christmas Eve celebration in my family is kind of something to behold and I am basically forbidden from missing it.

9. If you could be under the mistletoe with anyone who would it be?
My boyfriend. He's handsome. Swoon.

10. What tops your tree?
We have a pretty small tree, so I feel like we need a pretty small tree topper... Which is why we have a little gold, sparkly angel bell that we just kinda shoved on there. And it looks super cute and pretty.

11. Can you name the 12 days of Christmas?
Um... I think so? Partridge in a pear tree. 2 turtle doves. 3 French hens. 4 calling birds. 5 golden rings. 6 geese a laying. 7 swans a swimming. 8 maids a milking. 9 ladies dancing. 10 lords a leaping. 11 pipers piping. ... 12.....  Apparently not. Google informed me that it's 12 Drummers Drumming. I was close.

12. Have you ever gone Christmas caroling?
I'm pretty sure I did when I was a little kid, but I don't actually remember doing it.

13. Do you countdown to Christmas? If so, how many days are left?
I absolutely do and there are 9 days left! :)

14. What are some foods and treats you can count on having every holiday season?
Turkey & fixings. Perogies & cabbage rolls. Ponnukokor & vintarta. All the cookies a person could ever want, but especially shortbreak and snickerdoodles. FUDGE. ...Man, Christmas is hardcore.

15. How has Christmas kept its magic for you as you've grown older?
I feel like I'm a pretty cynical person generally, but there's something about Christmastime that makes me feel like a kid again. I mean, sure, it's busy and hectic and sometimes I get overwhelmed by all of the time spent with groups of my people that I, as a firm introvert, am exhausted by... But then there's Christmas movies and picking out THE PERFECT GIFT for the people I care about most, and a special annual lady breakfast with two of my best friends, and getting to put up the tree and get a little silly on spiked egg nog or cider. It's a time of year that is at its absolute best when it's about connecting with the people you care about and letting yourself be a little swept up in even the most cheesy of heartwarming - and I LOVE IT.

I'd love to see your answers to these questions, so I tag any and everyone who celebrates Christmas to do this and link me to their post down below! Thanks for reading and happy holidays to everyone!
