SUBSRIPTION: January 2016 Update Ipsy vs. Birchbox

by - February 08, 2016

If you checked out my original unboxing posts on January's subscription boxes, you'll know there was a pretty decisive winner and won't be at all surprised about how the comparison turned out. This has been an interesting month, though, and perhaps the last month that I'll actually bother to feature an Ipsy vs. Birchbox, since Birchbox is exiting the Canadian market. I am on the lookout for another subscription to replace my Birchbox one, as I've gotten a little bit spoiled getting two boxes a month, so if you have any suggestions I'd love it if you'd leave them in the comments! Now, without further adieu... let's proceed to the slaughter, shall we?

BIRCHBOX CANADA January 2016 (Unboxing)
Cost: $10CAD + $4.95CAD Shipping
Total Value: $21.40CAD
Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Micro Water: I actually really, really like this for taking off my eye makeup. It does a really good job and it's incredibly gentle on my eyes. The sample is way too small though. If it had been double the size (which is still small) I think this would have gotten more points in my eyes.
gorge* I'll Make You Look Amazing Daily Spray: Honestly, I only used this maybe twice and then forgot I had it... which I guess tells you how excited I was about it. I seem to recall it did an alright job as a leave in, but it didn't make me look amazing.
Raw Spirit Fragrances Winter Oak Eau De Parfum: Did. Not. Like. Also, still salty about getting so many fragrance samples.
TONYMOLY Delight Tony Tint: I already wasn't the hugest fan of this before I got it. I mean, as a tint it's fine and I'm sure a lot of people who are into tints would be happy about it... I'm just not particularly into tints myself.
Ursa Major Fortifying Face Balm: I actually chose to get this one... and was pretty disappointed with it over all. It's not as hydrating as I was expecting and it smells not good.

As you can tell, this was an incredibly underwhelming box for me. Combined with the disappointed feelings I have towards Birchbox Canada in general right now, this is just a real disappointment for me and didn't even begin to stand up to this month's Ipsy bag...

IPSY GLAMBAG JANUARY 2016 (Unboxing)
Cost: $10USD + $5USD Shipping (Total CDN Paid: $21.31)
Total Value: $121.77CAD
Mitchell & Peach English Growers English Leaf Body Cream: I really wasn't expecting to like this, because I'm guilty of judging a book by its cover and I don't really love the look of these bottles. However, I did really enjoy using this and I felt like it was really hydrating to my skin and left me feeling really smooth and soft.
pūr~lisse Blue Lotus 4-in-1 Eye Adore Serum: I've been using this consistently since I got it and I think it's a really nice eye cream. I'm not noticing any huge difference in the appearance of the skin around my eyes, but I definitely feel like it's doing a really good job of hydrating and subtly smoothing out my fine lines. This is a winner, in my book!
City Color Eyeshadow Trio in Falling Leaves: I love the colour story that's happening in this little trio and I think the quality is quite good for the price point. This is definitely a drugstore trio, but in my opinion it's quite a good drugstore trio and works quite nicely on the eyes.
Peek Beauty Natural Stain Brow Powder in Espresso: I'm not a huge brow powder kind of a girl, I tend to prefer pencil and gel, but I think that this is a really nice brow powder with a really widely usable shade and good performance.
theBalm Cosmetics Mr. Write (Now) Eyeliner Pencil in Scott B. Bordeaux: For my liking, this is a little too soft and you have to be careful not to crumble it, but it's really creamy and pigmented and has staying power to the moon. I will definitely get use out of this.

And the winner is.... IPSY! By a very, very wide margin, clearly. Honestly, even aside from the $100 difference in value of these two bags, I really liked the products in my Ipsy bag and was very disappointed with almost everything in my Birchbox. After really comparing the two this month, I'm not all that disappointed that I'll only be getting 2 more Birchboxes before the exit the Canadian market.

Thanks for reading!
