REVIEW: Huda Beauty Mauve Obsessions Palette

by - November 23, 2017

It's not often that I see a high end beauty product online and order it literally instantly, but that's exactly what happened when I checked out the Huda Beauty Mauve Obsessions palette on the Sephora website. Without a moment of hesitation, I added this to my cart and ordered it right then and there without reading a review or checking out swatches. Obviously, this can be a little bit of a risk, but the shade selection was so beautiful that I just couldn't resist.

So how did it turn out? Keep reading for more!

The Huda Beauty Obsessions range contains 4 different 9 pan palettes. Obviously, I chose the more mauve/red toned palette because that's the one that jumped out at me, but there is also a Warm Browns palette, a Smoky palette, and an Electric palette, each with their own specific colour story.  These palettes retail for $27US/$35CAD each. While the Sephora website says that each of these pans contains 1.3g of product, they actually contain 1g of product, making the overall weight of the palette 9g of product rather than the 11.7g that they implied. While it's not a big deal to me personally, I think that Sephora really needs to fix that on the site because it is obviously misleading customers to believe that they're getting 30% more product than they actually are and this can effect purchasing decisions.

If you're familiar with this blog, you probably know exactly why I picked this palette. I really like that this is a matte heavy palette, because I think it shows that brands are learning more and more having a good selection of mattes to use on their own or along with shimmery lid shades are really important. This palette contains 6 matte shades and 3 shimmery shades.

When it comes to the actual shade selection in this palette, I think it's decent but overall not perfect. There are a good selection of mattes from a very light highlight to a couple of really great deeper shades. Personally, my favorite shade in the palette is the deep cranberry in the lower right corner, which actually pulls quite vibrant and red when applied to the eyes. I think that shade works best when you ground it with the deep brown in the top left corner of the palette, but either way it's absolutely stunning. My issue with the palette is actually the shimmery shades. I think that even though each of the three shimmery shades is different, they're not different enough and I'd love to have seen the pink shimmer in the top row center replaced with something in a different tone, perhaps leaning towards a more taupey mauve. I really think that would have given this palette a lot more versatility.

When it comes to the shadow formula, again I think that it's good but not necessarily perfect. I actually really don't love the shimmery shades, particularly the lightest one which I find quite flaky. In fact, overall no matter what I use to apply the shimmery shades, they don't have a smooth finish to them and end up looking a little bit chunky on the lids. I've tried all three with brushes, fingers, and even sponge tips and none of them really get it done the way I'd like. I quite like the mattes and I think they have really good pigmentation and they blend pretty well, I just find them a little bit drier than I personally prefer. I like a really creamy matte,  because I find they apply and blend easier. I wouldn't call these chalky or anything like that, but I do think they're definitely more stiff and dry than the formulas that I'm used to recently.

Overall, I feel sort of middle of the road about this palette - which I wasn't really expecting. I think it's absolutely gorgeous to look at, but it isn't as versatile as I might have hoped and the formulas aren't really to my personal taste - and I really think Huda needs to rethink her shimmery formula entirely, if this is how they behave. I'm not mad at this palette, but I don't think I'll be running out to buy any of the other Obsessions palettes either. I think that I would reserve my recommendation of this palette to people who are really looking for this type of shade or people who enjoy these types of formulas.

The Huda Beauty Mauve Obsessions Palette is available now at Sephora for $35CAD.
