HALLOWEEN NAIL ART: Cutesy & Spooky Neon Bats Skittle Mani

by - October 17, 2021

2021 has definitely been the year that I've really developed an appreciation for the humble skittle mani, so of course I had to slot at least one into this 31 day long madness festival I've committed to here. I decided to go with an array of neon polishes for this design along with a speckled topper and some really simple black and white stamping, and I love how it turned out. This is another one of those mani's that I think would be really easy to recreate, especially if you're looking for a design that is definitely hand-paintable (though I, because I'm me, did do stamping for this.)

Keep reading for more!

I will admit that I spent a little more time choosing the shades for this mani than you might thing. The reason is that I wanted neons, but like.. a little bit more muted? I didn't want your acid neons, I wanted a softer but still in your face bright selection of shades. I went with a turquoise, a pink, an orange, and a purple and applied them each to one of my nails. (Generally when I'm doing nail art like this, I match my thumb to my pinkie, and that's also what I did with this mani, not pictured.) It took two coats for each nail and then I followed with a black and white speckled glitter topper to add some texture and to work cohesively with what I had planned for the stamping.

Again, because this was a skittle and that already makes it inherently busier than a mani with all one color base, I wanted to keep the stamping from being too busy. I started by applying this sort of curly spiderweb image in white to the corner of each of my nails, moving the placement so that no two nails were the same. Next, I went in and applied these three bats to each nail, shifting the placement of them as well - and only applying two to my bitty little pinkie nail.

Once I was happy with the stamping, I sealed it in with a layer of nail art top coat and then finished with a layer of matte top coat to take down the shine. And voila!

There's something about this design that makes me feel really happy when I look at it. Perhaps it's the overall simplicity of the design combined with just how much visual impact it has on the nails. I dunno, I really love how it turned out though and I'm glad that I gave the neon skittle a chance in this collection of nail art! It's weird because there's nothing overtly cutesy about it, but as soon as I look at this my brain is just like, "Cute!"
