UNBOXING: Memebox OMG Box

by - August 14, 2014

One of the coolest things, if you ask me, about Korean beauty is that sometimes it's REALLY. FREAKIN'. WEIRD. I think anyone who has spent much time looking at Asian beauty products or actually using them knows that they employ some techniques and use some products that can make those of us in North America tilt our heads like "... Who's a what now?" It's the best, if you ask me. Now, maybe I'm just a little bit jaded, but it's actually pretty hard to surprise me when it comes to Korean beauty. I've done the snail slime thing, been intrigued by the cocoon face cleansing balls, and looked into a few other things that are pretty strange, so it's hard to shock me. Still, I had to order this box in hopes that I would have my world rocked. Do you think I did? Do I think I did?

I don't know... Keep reading for a closer look.

From the Memebox website:

Sounds pretty interesting, right? I had no choice. Unlike the other boxes I've done, I'm going to provide the full description from the card since this stuff is supposed to be real weird and I feel like a part of this first impression is weighing whether or not these products live up to the premise of the box.

1. Elizavecca Milky Piggy Carbonated Bubble Clay Mask - Full Size - Value: $46
"This is the ultimate one-step facial mask with both pore care and cleansing functions. Not only is it packed with green tea extracts, pomegranate extracts and charcoal extracts, this Clay Mask contains carbonated water which starts to bubble up the very moment it's applied on your face and deeply penetrates into your pores for getting all the gunk out without having to harden up like average clay masks."

So, a clay mask. It's not exactly revolutionary, but I don't feel like it has to be - especially not for a mask lover like myself. My favorite kind of mask is definitely the clay mask variety, so I'd have been happy with this in any box. I am, however, kind of intrigued by the idea that it bubbles on your skin to get into your pores and really clean them out. That's actually the thing that I generally love about a clay mask, it's really deep cleaning and I always feel like my pores are tight and fresh after, so if this can do an even better job of that then I'm in. Also, can I just say that I really love how many natural ingredients and infusions are in Korean skincare? I feel like they strike a really unique balance between science and nature. Anyway, I feel like the carbonated water definitely gives something a little unique to this product, but I don't necessarily feel like it's OMG weird.

2. SKINAZ Premium Vitablet - Full Size - Value: $46
"You might wonder - What is a vitablet? Vitablet comes from combining 'vitamin' and 'tablet' and refers to SKINAZ's unique tablet-type of vitamin cleanser rich in Vitamin C and aroma oil. What's so special about this is that it even takes care of skin care while cleansing with its skin beneficial formula containing more than 300g of vitamin C which is equivalent to 4.3 whole lemons. It'll be like having done a nourishing vitamin pack."

I'm a little bit confused about how these little tablets, which are about the size of a daily multivitamin, contain 300g of vitamin C. Now, granted, I'm not a scientist and I don't actually know how vitamins concentrate within these kinds of things, but I would say it's definitely not even a 300mg tablet. But moving on... I definitely feel like this is something pretty different. This says that you're supposed to dissolve the tablet in water and gently rinse your face with the vitamin water. Also, it can be used as a facial mist, for hair, or even on babies. I actually kinda love the idea of putting this into a spray bottle and using it as a mist. (YOU KNOW HOW I LOVE A MIST!!) I've used the kind of toner tablets that you use for steaming your face, but I've never actually used anything like this. As far as being unique, I'm definitely sold on this one. We'll see how I feel about cleansing my face with it. We'll see.

3. Hope Girl Night Diva Gloss in 04 Pink Candy - Full Size - Value: $22
"This is a lip gloss with two different shades gradated together in a single product! Despite it being a gloss, the Night Diva Gloss is non-sticky, smoothly spreading, and highly moist all in one. Also, it carried a built in LED light and a mirror so you don't have to take out your hand mirror or visit the ladies room for a quick touch up anymore."

Lip gloss. This is lip gloss. Completely non-revolutionary lip gloss. Yes, there is a light in the wand and a mirror, which gives it a little gimmick for a night out, but I don't think a gimmick like that makes something weird. I've had products with lights in the wand and mirrors on the packaging before. Still, it's pretty and they don't lie about it being smooth and non-sticky. It applies quite nicely and doesn't feel uncomfortable on the lips. Still, I think this is the biggest fail in the box as far as the OMG factor. And, as I'm sure you can tell, I'm definitely not jumping up and down with excitement about it.

4. Ladykin Aqua Exfoliator For Body - Full Size - Value: $14
"In Korea, going down to a local public bath for a nice scrub is a very common and popular thing. You can get a quick glimpse into the world of 'body scrubs/exfoliators' with this gentle exfoliator from Ladykin. Enriched with cellulose components from papaya and pineapple extracts, this Aqua Exfoliator For Body removes all bodily dead skin cells and unnecessary impurities without having to scrub down hard enough to stimulate your sensitive skin. All you need to do is spray this product all over your body and softly roll away the dead skin cells for cleaner, fresh, and smoother body skin!"

This right here? This one definitely intrigues the hell out of me. The directions say to apply this to your clean, towel dried body after a shower and then just rub at your skin and roll away the visible dead skin and impurities. Just roll it away! I sprayed a little bit of this on my arm and it was one of the weirdest beauty product experiences I've had lately. I really did end up with little balls of dead skin that I had to brush away. Gross? Absolutely. Interesting? Without a doubt. I'm looking forward to giving this a more intense try after my next shower, because it could definitely be the winner of the OMG award amongst everything in this box.

5. SKINAZ The Kissable 24H Lip Tattoo in Kiss Orange - Full Size - Value: $18
"SKINAZ takes lip makeup to a whole new level with its Lip Tattoo! This'll be the ultimate no-makeup makeup since it actually works like an impermanent color tattoo on your lips and does not smudge or get erased for 24 hours long. Plus, it comes in five lusciously radiant colors."

This product was the spoiler product from this box and I was absolutely intrigued when I saw a brief video showing how it works. Basically, you smooth a layer of this jelly type gloss onto your lips and let it set for 10-15 minutes before peeling it off to leave your lips stained. Kind of really cool, right? For me, the eternal hater of the disappointing lip stain, this could have been a winner. IT COULDA BEEN A CONTENDER! Alas, add this to the list of orange lip products that I've received from South Korea. When I was swatching this, I quickly applied it to my wrist, took the picture, and then wiped it with a makeup wipe... and was left with a fairly disgusting swipe of orangey yellow stain on my wrist that looked somewhat like I was diseased. I'm sure the colour would intensify to being actually orange if I let it set, but... Then I'd be stuck with an orange stain for 24 hours and I don't think I can get behind that. For the sake of this blog, though, I might try this out when I don't have to go out in public... or when I have a really large stockpile of cold cream to try to remove it. Cool concept, Memebox, but a terrible colour. I wish I would have gotten 1 of the other 4 options. Sigh.

6. Pure Smile 3step Bust Pack - 1 Set Full Size - Value: $6
"This is a quick 3 step process for taking care of your bust, especially recommended to be used before wearing a bikini! The gommage, the hydro-gel pack, and the cream are enriched with various nutritious ingredients for maintaining your bust skin soft and well-moisturized."

So this is a pack for your boobs. Let's let that sink in for a minute. It's a 3 step boob pack. I assume it's supposed to make them look firm and bouncy and boobilicious? I don't know. I pulled this out to show my boyfriend and his response was utter confusion combined with weird uses of curse words. I'm with him. BUT STILL, I'm kind of excited to try this because this is definitely the kind of weird product that I was hoping for in this box. It's literally something I've never heard of or even considered before, and to me that makes it OMG enough. Also, the picture on the back of the package that is demonstrating the steps has the hydrogel pack looking like heart shaped pasties. I'm kinda hoping that's what they actually look like when I take them out of the package to use them. Weird, my friends. So weird. And possibly genius.

Pink Candy (left), Kiss Orange (right)

Total Value: $152

On a scale of 1 to OMG, I'd give this a solid 7. There's definitely some really interesting products in here that I'm looking forward to trying. This box definitely loses points for both of the lip products, neither of which I'll probably ever use, but it wins on the fact that there are definitely a couple of very interesting and unique products in it. I think I would definitely try another OMG box, if only for the novelty of it.

Clearly I'm going to sound like a broken record here, but I will definitely reiterate that Memebox is definitely worth trying out, whether you're as obsessed with Korean products or simply curious about them. There's a wide selection of different boxes to order and you never have to worry about getting your money's worth. Try it. Seriously. Click below for some referral only deals!

Check back next week (hopefully!) for a couple more Memebox unboxings. Yes, I am addicted.

XO.
