REVIEW: NYX Butter Lipstick in Licorice

by - October 29, 2014

I know, I know... This baby is not new anymore, but I've been lusting after it for ages and haven't been able to get it locally until now. I probably could have ordered it much sooner, but I always seem to talk myself out of online orders that have higher shipping charges and give myself permission for another Memebox. My brain, this is how it works. So last week I went into the new Target location here in Winnipeg, which is much larger and schmancier than any of the other locations, and low and behold they had the entire NYX collection all displayed and shiny, so I was able to pick up a few things that I had been lusting after.

When I was a teenager in the late 90s, I fancied myself a bit goth adjacent. I wasn't anywhere near being actual goth, but I sort of danced along the edges of the subculture. As such, a deep, vampy lip was one of my first real makeup statements and it's been one of those things that I've carried through loving into adulthood. Obviously now you can see why this lipstick had to come home with me.

From the NYX website:
Pamper your lips with a hydrating kiss of smooth Butter Lipstick in 22 luxurious shades. The delicate texture of satin fused with the high color saturation creates an even finish on lips that’s long-wearing and beautiful.
Good claims, right? Long wearing and hydrating? Could it be true???

As ever, we start with the packaging. I actually really like the packaging of all of the NYX Butter products, because they tend to be really on point with the colour that you're going to get from the product itself. With the lipsticks specifically, there's a kind of plastic window in the center of the tube that allows you to see the product itself, which I really like. Overall, I feel like this packaging is unique, cute, and functional. Thumbs up, NYX.

Here's a little story. I picked this lipstick up on my lunch break and ended up popping through the Starbucks drive thru after my shopping trip for a pick me up. The line was kinda lon, so I started ripping the packaging off my new products to take a look and in the sunlight I noticed that this lipstick actually looks like it has a frosty shimmer in it in the tube. I. Was. Not. Impressed. However, once I got it home and tried it out, I found that literally none of that frosty shimmer shows up on the lips. Like. At all. So, that's a weird thing about this formula.

Speaking of the formula... I actually really love the feel of this lipstick on my lips. I always hesitate to say that I find a lipstick hydrating, because when I think of something being hydrating I definitely think more of the effects of a good lip balm rather than a lipstick, so I can't really say that I find this lipstick hydrating. What I will say though is that it's really comfortable and non-drying on the lips. The formula is really smooth and incredibly pigmented and I find the wear time to be quite good. Initally, I find that this has a lot of shine, but it blots down to a really pretty more matte finish easily, which makes it quite versatile, I think.

This shade is actually reading a little more plum in pictures than I find it on the lips. On the lips, I think it looks a little more like a deep cranberry wine shade. Either way, I think it's a really beautiful vampy shade that can be applied a little more lightly for a more wearable look or really piled on for a super dramatic lip. This shade definitely isn't for everyone, but I think it's actually a great way to introduce a more dramatic lip colour to people who didn't dance on the fringes of goth in high school.

I'm definitely looking forward to picking up a few more of these lipsticks. And soon! Look for reviews on more colours in the future, since I can't be the only Canadian who has had a hell of a time finding these babies!

XO.
