REVIEW: L.A. Girl Glazed Lip Paints

by - November 26, 2014

Ever since I saw a few reviews of these on Youtube after they launched in the States, I've been wanting to get my hands on them. I actually had them in an online shopping basket a few times, but it just kills me when the cost of shipping makes the cost of these so much higher than they actually are - which is a damn fine bargain price, if you ask me. So when I saw the full display of them at Winners, I pretty much had no choice but to pick up a few of them. I mean... Really... Anyway, this were priced at $4.99 at Winners, which I still think is still a really good price for them since all of the websites that I saw them on were selling them for around $4 each.

I absolutely couldn't wait to get home and try them out and then put them up here on the blog for you to see, so keep reading for my thoughts...

left to right: blush, whimsical, and daring

From the L.A. Girl USA Website:
This proven iconic product offers shades that range from nudes to brights to deep berries. Cool and nourish your lips with the added benefits of vitamin E and peppermint oil. The Glazed Lip Collection is an instant must-have that accurately portrays the color trends expected to be seen on the runway. A precision tip applicator is provided to facilitate application.

-Provides the shine of a lip gloss.
-Gives the intensely pigmented appearance of a liquid lipstick
-Delivers rich color with staying power.
These liquid lipsticks come packaged in small squeeze tubes whose colour quite accurately matches the product in the tube with black and gold accents. Overall, I actually quite the packaging and find it quite similar to the Too Faced Melted Lipsticks, which I would hazard to say these are trying to dupe. I've only swatched the Too Faced Melted Lipsticks in store, so I can't actually speak to the similarities between these two products aside from the applicator and appearance of the tube. The applicator, as you will see below, does not dupe the sponge tip applicator of the Too Faced products. This product instead features a slanted tip plastic applicator which can be used to apply the product after squeezing a small amount out onto it. With a product this pigmented, I find this applicator to be highly inconvenient, as it still requires a brush or your finger in order to spread the product evenly over your lips. Particularly with the darker shade, I find that it's pretty much impossible to get a good, easy application without using a brush.

One thing that surprised me about this product is the formula. I was initially expecting it to fairly thick and heavy, but once applied and smoothed onto the lips it's quite light and comfortable. I haven't noticed any stickiness with the formula, but I still find that the wear time is quite good for this type of product. Something that I'm not super keen on is the addition of the peppermint oil. First off, it makes it smell like an old candy cane, which some people might like but I definitely do not. Also, I find it to make the product a little more drying on the lips than I might like it to be. Now, don't get me wrong, this isn't drying the way a lot of matte cream lipsticks are, but I do find that my lips feel a little bit tighter than I might like them to at the end of the day. Definitely moisturize your lips before you use this product, particularly at this time of year.

Now, onto the shades that I picked up....

ELUDE: Soft peachy nude shade.

This is definitely my favorite of the three. This shade is a very wearable peach, that manages not to run too peachy or too beige. It's incredibly flattering, giving my lips life rather than deading them out. The finish is definitely quite shiny when you first apply, as promised, but it maintains some colour and creaminess as the shine fades. I also find that the colour fades really evenly and flatteringly with this shade, which makes it perfect for daytime since I can't be bothered to reapply my lip product at work.

WHIMSICAL: Blue toned pink orchid type shade.

This shade, even though it's quite light, is not necessarily for the faint of heart. While the colour of the tube gives the impression that it will be a more muted mauve toned blue based pink, this has a lot of punch on the lips. Had this been released sooner, this definitely would have populated a lot of lists of 2014 Radiant Orchid lip products. It's very pretty, very punchy, and I think I would almost like to categorize is as a kind of neon lavender, if that makes any sense whatsoever. Formula wise, this is nearly identical to Elude in how it looks, feels, and wears on the lips.

DARING: Deep purple berry shade.

This was the first shade I chose from the display because 2014 has definitely been all about purple lips for me. This shade is a deep grape purple that somehow manages to be very, very wearable at the same time. Obviously, these sorts of shades can sometimes dance the line between wearable and over-the-top no matter how beautiful they are. As far as formula, I would say that this one definitely deviates from the other two, which is even evident in the swatches below. It's a little less shiny and creamy, which I think is a good thing with this kind of shade. It's also a little bit stickier than the other two, but I don't actually find it uncomfortable to wear in the least. Wear time is quite good with this product and I do find that it does leave behind a berry bitten kind of stain on the lips once the shine and most of the product has faded. Of the three, I would say that this reminds me most of the OCC Lip Tars, though I wouldn't call it a dupe.

Overall, I'm fairly happy with these products. I do wish that they had left the peppermint oil out of the formula, because I think that the benefit of leaving it out would outweight that of keeping it in. While the tingle on the lips doesn't hurt like some products, it's definitely present and I would not recommend this product to someone who is staunchly against that. My favorite shades are definitely Elude and Daring, for completely different reasons. Elude because it's a beautiful, wearable creamy nude that keeps very much in line with what I love for every day, and Daring because it's a very versatile product that falls right in line with the purple lip trend that I've been loving.

So there you have it! These products are available in, at least, some Winners stores as well as various online retailers at a highly affordable price and are pretty great if you don't mind the peppermint oil addition to the formulation.

Have you tried any of the L.A. Girl Glazed Lip Paints? What's your favorite liquid lipstick formula?

XO.

    1. If it helps, I saw the display at the Regent location, but they didn't have them at the Ellice location when I was there on Monday. I think I have a Winners addiction....
