MUSIC MONDAY #3 - Sia

by - January 05, 2015

I've been a fan of Sia since the first time I heard Breathe Me and have been consistently impressed with everything she's put out since. She's also an amazing songwriter for other people, but there's something about her slightly yodely voice on the songs she writes that just gets me every time. Admittedly, I was a little behind on getting this particular album because I hadn't been paying enough attention to new music released, but the first time I heard this I fell completely in love and it's been a staple in my collection ever since. I don't know what it is, but when I pop my headphones in to listen to music while I do my hair and makeup, I always come back to this song and Elastic Heart.

The older I get, the more I'm drawn to music that's written by women about the experiences of being a woman. I don't know if that makes sense, because it's a difficult thing to articulate. Basically, I don't connect with songs from the point of view of a girl, I want songs from the point of view of a grown woman who has clearly been through some things. Give me someone like Sia or Fiona Apple or Ani Difranco over someone like Taylor Swift every day. I will actually argue the virtues of pop music to the moon, but I want to feel a genuine emotion and experience even in my pop songs. I also really like songs that express that feeling of having a rigid strength of character and self and yet still being human and vulnerable. For women, I think that's a place that most of us tend to live in and I feel very connected to that kind of expression. BRING ON THE STRONG WOMEN MUSICIANS, PLEASE.

"I don't care if I don't look pretty
Big girls cry when their hearts are breaking."

Anyway, happy FIRST Music Monday of 2015. ENJOY!
