MONTHLY MASCARA: February 2015

by - March 04, 2015

I decided I want to try a new monthly feature on the blog, when I realized that I do in fact tend to try out at least 1 new mascara each month. I also discovered that I still have half of my 2013 Sephora Lash Stash completely untouched. How did this happen, you ask? Well, I tucked it into the stool that I use at my vanity and kind of forgot about it, for the most part. Luckily, I had the foresight not to open any of the tubes before I was ready to use them, so they should still be alright to use - as long as I start using them right away. Hence, Project Monthly Mascara. Also, I feel like there are pretty much constantly new mascaras coming out a the drugstore, so there's always something new to try. Featuring a different mascara each month for review should be no problem, right? Because this is going to be a monthly feature, I'll try to get sample sizes of higher end mascaras to keep trying out once my Lash Stash has been depleted so that we don't entirely focus on drugstore brands at that point. I always like to try sample sizes of high end mascaras, because it really feels like a waste of money if they're not outstanding.

So for the first mascara in this series, we're going to take a look at the Buxom Lash Mascara in Blackest Black, which was featured in the 2013 Lash Stash. I had tried one other Buxom Mascara a couple of years ago, but never this one. So how did it hold up? Keep reading to find out!

From the Sephora website:
"Transform lashes with this ultra-volumizing mascara. The vitamin-enriched, clump-resistant formula deepens, darkens, and thickens while the curvy, hourglass-shaped brush evenly coats lashes from root to tip."

I'm going to start with the good things about this mascara... This baby is VERY black, you guys. You know how some mascaras tend to linger in a shade that almost appears to be kind of faded? That is not an issue with this mascara. It's black as night. Another good thing I've found about it is that it doesn't flake or smudge even if I wear it for 12-14 hours. Finally, I would say that is does build pretty good volume without getting too clumpy or spidery on me.

Now for the cons... The first, and most glaring, is that this wand is gigantic. I can say with almost certainty that this is the biggest mascara wand I've ever seen or tried to use. Now, some people with big eyes would likely think this is a good thing, but for those of us with fairly average sized peepers, this is just obnoxious. I have made a mess literally every single time I've applied this, no matter what I've done to try and make it less sloppy. Another con, for me, is that this really doesn't lengthen at all. Granted, it doesn't claim to, but that's always a big requirement for me. I'll take length over volume any day. Finally, there is an ingredient in this mascara that irritates me eyes and makes them run to the point that I've ruined several eye looks by applying this.

Gotta tell you guys, this one is a pass for me. The cons far outweigh the pros, especially for what I'm personally looking for in a mascara, and I feel like there are numerous drugstore mascaras that perform a hell of a lot better than this one. I'm honestly pretty bummed that this was my first Monthly Mascara pick, because it just didn't get it done for me.

So there you have it, the first Monthly Mascara on Prairie Beauty Love. Check back next month for my review of the next mascara from my stash that I'll be trying on for size!
