12 NAILS OF CHRISTMAS | Cozy & Cool Holo Sweater Nails

by - December 07, 2018

Last year when I was putting together Christmas nail art, I leaned pretty heavily on sweater nails. Partially this is because I had a heck of a lot less stamping plates at that point, but also because I feel like they're a really versatile and cozy pattern that you can really play with. I knew that this year I wanted to do at least one sweater mani and ultimately decided to go in a little bit of a different direction, ultimately inspired by a pair of pink, grey and white leggings that I love to wear around the house at this time of year.

For this mani, I started as I always do with polishes that contain a fair amount of glitter, and applied a coat of Unt Ready For Take Off Peel Off Base Coat to all of my nails.  Next, I decided that I wanted to construct the mani with my middle two fingers being different from the outer two - something that I tend to do a lot. For my first and pinkie finger, I applied 3 coats of NailsInc Holler-Graphic Nail Polish in Rocket Fuel and for my middle two fingers I chose its companion polish, NailsInc Holler-Graphic Nail Polish in Ghetto Galactic and applied three coats of that as well.

For the stamping, I wanted to choose two images that would pair well together but wouldn't be too similar, so I actually ended up reaching for two different stamping plates. For all of the stamping, I used the BornPrettyStore White Stamping Polish. Over the silver base, I applied this sort of more argyle pattern from the XY-Merry Christmas 05 Stamping Plate. I love this type of pattern, it's one of my personal favorites. Over the pink base, I wanted to go really traditional and I really went back and forth on which pattern to use, but ultimately I used an image from the XY-Merry Christmas 01 Stamping Plate because I really liked the scale of it.

To finish, I started with a coat of Essence The Gel Polish Top Coat because it doesn't smear my stamping. Once that was dry, I also applied a coat of CND Speedey Daily Defense Top Coat because I felt like the holo could pop a little bit more and I find that this top coat really helps to bump up the rainbows in a holo base - and it did!

Granted, I don't think this is the pairing that you'd automatically think of when it comes to Christmas nails, but this combination of pink, silver and white really feels cozy and cool at the same time. It reminds me of staying in my PJs on Christmas morning and having breakfast and coffee with my family and then opening presents. The thing I really love about sweater nails is that you really have all of the freedom in the world. You can keep it pretty with soft pairings like this, go more traditional with red and greens and golds, or you can go full ugly Christmas sweater and just go off the wall. It's definitely the kind of mani that has literally no rules.

Thanks for reading! Come back next week for the continuation of my 12 Nails Of Christmas series here on the blog, leading all the way up to Christmas Eve!
