MANI MONDAY PRIDE 2020 | Glittery Rainbow Sharpie Nails

by - June 15, 2020

For this month's #CBBxManiMonday Nail Art Roulette, we knew that we absolutely had to include Rainbow as one of our colour stories because we all love to celebrate Pride every year with nail art. I got SUPER lucky with my random number generator and landed on Texture as my theme, which we decided would refer to texture in terms of glitter, flakies or anything that would give an interesting... well, texture to the look, and I knew exactly what I wanted to do. (Although, to be honest, I probably would have made something very similar to this mani with a few of the possible pairings that could have come up....) Anyway, I put together this glittery Sharpie rainbow base, added some negative space heart stamping, and am completely in love with the look!

Keep reading for a closer look!

I actually watched a few tutorials on how to get this look using Sharpies, but I think the one I chose to follow was definitely the right choice. For this look, you need a glittery silver base, so I started with one coat of Sally Hansen's Silver Stallion to give me an opaque base and then went in with a coat of OPI Champagne For Breakfast to give me the glitteriness. You could also just sponge on your glitter to opacity, but... this seemed a lot simpler to me (and a lot easier to remove, for someone who hates glitter....)

NOTE: This is one of those times when I really, really recommend using a cuticle barrier because if the Sharpie runs (and it likely will) it can stain your cuticles and be really, really difficult to remove. For this mani you'll also need a small flat nail art brush, alcohol at a high concentration and it's easiest if you have it in a spray bottle (I used hand sanitizer and it worked really well), and a small glass container like a dappen dish or a shot glass in a pinch.

Now to build the rainbow, start with the colour you're going to place closest to the cuticle and draw it into the bottom of your dappen dish. I applied quite a bit because I wanted it to be pretty opaque on the first pass and just sort of drew until I got good coverage on the bottom of my dappen dish. Next, you're going to add a small spritz of your alcohol into the dish and then mix with your brush to basically create an alcohol ink. Apply to all of your nails and then clean out your dish and brush with alcohol before moving onto the next colour. As you add colours, try to blend the edges into each other so that you get a good gradient rather than just stripes of colour. Once you've applied all of the colours and let them dry for a minute or two, apply at least one coat of top coat to seal them.

For the stamping, I went with white stamping polish and this great negative space image from PUEEN Fairytale Lover 02. I love the idea of the rainbow bursting out from the hearts because... Obviously, these are Pride nails. To finish, I added a generous coat of Seche Vive to seal in the stamping and voila!

I absolutely love to celebrate Pride every year on my nails, but I think this one might be my absolute favorite. What says pride more than a glittery rainbow bursting from hearts, am I right?

As always, be sure to head over to Cosmetic Proof and See The World In PINK to check out what the ladies drew for this week's Nail Art Roulette pairing and how they interpreted the theme!
