NAIL ART: Crisp Blue & Green Abstract Negative Space Nails

by - April 30, 2021

I definitely feel like 2021 is going to be a year of different types of abstract nails, especially negative space ones, and I've personally been feeling a lot of inspiration to do these types of mani's. Recently I picked up a new stamping plate that is 100% perfect for adding different little decorations to this type of mani and I decided to pair it with some really exciting and super pigmented polishes from Dimension Nails that were kindly gifted to me from NailStuff.ca** for this bright, fun negative space mani!

For this mani, I started with one coat of a sheer nude polish on my middle two fingers to even out my nail bed a little bit. I like the look of naked nails, but that one coat of sheer nude polish definitely helps to disguise any flaws in my nail bed and just gives a cleaner base. For the rest of my fingers, I went in with the three shades I used for the nail art and applied two coats for full opacity of each.

For the little blobbies - as I like to call them - I figured these three shades from Dimension Nails would work really well together - a cerulean blue, a bright acidic green, and a soft turquoise. These polishes are really, really perfect for this sort of nail art because they're so intensely pigmented and I don't have to do multiple layers to get really rich, full coverage with them.

Honestly, the great thing about this kind of nail art is that you can really just sort of do some free form blobs using your desired polishes and leaving some space at the center of the nail open and you're sort of good to go. I tried to be mindful of the placement of each color - I'm generally pretty determined to mix things up in my designs - but other than that I just sort of used my favorite liner brush to outline a shape and then filled it in with polish straight from the bottle.

For my stamping, I wanted to go with smaller images that wouldn't overwhelm the nail too much and would add some shape and softness that went with the blobbies and I wanted black for some crisp contrast to go with the really bold colors. Once I was happy with my stamping, I sealed in the nail art with a layer of water based top coat before finishing all of my nails with a coat of quick dry matte top coat and voila!

Honestly, as I was in the middle of doing this mani, I felt like it was either going to be a smashing success or I was absolutely going to hate it - and even at the end I wasn't entirely sure, but I'm definitely pretty in love with it at this point and quite eager to try out this style with different colors and stamping images.
