CHRISTMAS NAIL ART: Holly Jolly Buffalo Plaid Ornament Nails

by - December 04, 2022

As soon as I had Uberchic It's A Season Of Joy Stamping Plate in hand, I knew that I wanted to put together a mani using the layered buffalo plaid images on the plate. Initially, I figured I would end up doing something pretty classic with it - either a red and black or a white and black buffalo plaid - but when I sat down to actually do this mani I started playing around with different ideas for color stories and I ended up settling on this sort of playful teal vibe that sort of ended up giving a really fun sort of... vintage diner decorated for the holidays kind of vibe - or at least that's what it feels like to me!

So like I said, the color story for this shifted at the last minute and I must say that it was almost entirely inspired by this base polish. Painted Polish's Ice Ice Cave-y was a PPU shade what feels like ages ago and as much as I love it I don't get to pull it out as often as I'd like. Obviously, any excuse to pull it out is going to feel like a good one and I think this is a really solid wintery polish to go with. It's a white crelly packed with white, turquoise, black and gold fine hex glitters that somehow, to me, feels chilly and cozy all at the same time.

I started by applying two coats of Ice Ice Cave-y to all of my nails and letting those dry down.

I have to say, I get stressed out about layered stamping because I'm an intense perfectionist, but it really does work to put together a really, really quick nail art design. For my first and pinkie fingers as well as my thumb, I used this layered ornament image starting with the teal base, then the buffalo plaid design in white, and finally the outline in black. For my middle finger, I did the same thing with the matching buffalo plaid Christmas tree image and then when that felt a wee bit sparse on the nails I decided to add in a couple of black and white snowflakes at the corners just to add a little something. And finally, for my middle finger, I decided to add the "Have A Holly Jolly Christmas" text image first in teal and then layered with black on top to keep it cohesive with the rest of the design and add some visual interest.

Once I was finished up with my stamping, I sealed everything in with a nail art top coat and then followed with a generous layer of quick dry glossy top coat for shine and volume. And voila!

I really do try to change up the colors in my holiday nail art designs so that everything isn't just all in traditional holiday colors, and I think this teal and white combination did manage to feel holiday appropriate while still being kind of different. I also think the somewhat vintage vibe of the buffalo plaid and the text just sort of works somehow.

If you want to see how I did this mani, specifically the layered aspect of it, be sure to head over to @pblnails on Instagram to check out the video tutorial and follow me there to keep up on all of my nail art, including new holiday themed nail art every day in December up until Christmas Eve.
