REVIEW: Essence Long Lasting Lipstick - 06 Barely There!

by - August 27, 2014

When these lipsticks launched in the US last year, I believe they were exclusive to one store. Still, I saw pictures and I pretty badly wanted to try them. Luckily, they launched along with the rest of the new Fall 2014 stuff at Shopper's this month and I picked up two of them (so far) to try out finally. I'm definitely becoming more and more of a lip junkie these days, so I'm definitely not about to complain about a line of new lipsticks that retails for $2.99 a piece... Let's face it, I'll probably own all of the shades sooner rather than later.

However, for the time being, let's take a look at 06 Barely There! The punctuation is theirs, by the way. I'm excited about lipsticks, don't get me wrong... but not quite that excited.

From the Essence website:
longlasting love… you simply have to fall in love with the longlasting lipsticks by essence. the lipsticks provide your lips with intensive color for several hours without drying them out. you’re sure to find whatever you’re looking for – from bright pink to intensive red and chilled-out berry to subtle nude shades. the essence logo on the texture and the matt, black packaging with a ring of color to match the actual color of the lipstick are true eye-catchers!

The packaging on these lipsticks stands head and shoulders above pretty much anything in a comparable price range. I absolutely love it. The tube is a matte black finish with the Essence logo molded into the top of the cap. There's a band around the middle of the tube that corresponds to the shade in the tube. This packaging absolutely doesn't look or feel flimsy or cheap. The cap snaps into place securely so I'm not the least bit worried about it coming off in my purse and getting full of purse lint. That's happened to everyone, hasn't it? All of the sudden, you're rooting around in your purse for your lipstick and you find it with the cap mysteriously elsewhere and it's got gouges in it and lint stuck to it? It's pretty much the grosses thing ever, as far as I'm concerned, and my number one reason for caring about secure packaging. And this has it. The packaging on this lipstick gets a complete and total thumbs up from me. Good on ya, Essence.

Another nice detail is that they printed the Essence logo into the side of the lipstick, which definitely reminds me of much higher end products. It's not a detail that makes any difference to the quality of the product, but it does make it feel a little bit special, I think.

Now, this product promises long wear without drying out your lips. Anyone who reads this blog knows that wear time is not my strong suit, since I tend to rub my lips together until the product has worn off, but I can tell you that this definitely stands up to my rubbing a lot better than a lot of lipsticks. Application of this lipstick was smooth and creamy, without any patchiness or drag on the lips. The wear was quite comfortable and lightweight, though I did feel aware that I had product on my lips. I did find that once it wears down to where there isn't any shine but some colour remains, my lips did feel a little bit dryer than I might like, but not in a way that was particularly bothersome - a swipe of lip balm and I was aces again. This product has no discernible smell or taste, which I think is generally a huge bonus since some lipsticks smell gross - even when they're meant to smell nice.

This shade 06 Barely There! is a warm neutral mid-toned pink with a cream finish. I find that for me this is a really solid Your Lips But Better type of shade that's really good for every day wear. I also feel like it's fairly on trend as lip colours tend to move more into that 90s style warm toned lip. It's not quite there, but it's a pretty good transition for those of us who remember that lip colour trend not-so-fondly.

So there you have it, I'm pretty sold on this lipstick and can't wait to try more. There's a matte red that is absolutely calling my name.

Essence Long Lasting Lipstick is available for $2.99 CAD exclusively at Shopper's Drug Mart.
