UNBOXING: Julep Maven January 2015

by - January 15, 2015

It's been a minute since I posted a Julep Unboxing... but that's because I've been choosing the skip option recently. The reasons I've been skipping have been threefold. First, I've been trying to be a little more selective about how I spend my money, especially as the holidays were approaching and most of my shopping budget was directed at gifts for friends and family. Second, I've been trying not to buy nail polish recently, because I haven't been painting my nails all that often and my collection is already out of control. Third, I just haven't been whipped into excitement by Julep recently - which is probably more to do with my lack of interest in nails more than their actual selection.

This month, however, there was a bonus top coat that I absolutely needed to have as well as a new lip product that I was dying to try, so I went for it. Keep reading to take a closer look at my box and for my thoughts on its contents.

This month's collection was called the Chrysalis Collection and I stuck with the Boho Glam box because I was interested in trying the new Luxe Lip Conditioning Treatment and the Gel Eye Glider, which came out a while ago I believe but I hadn't yet tried it. Also, I just love the tone of the blue nail polish shade that was included in the box. Before the Maven reveal, Julep made an offer to Mavens to reserve one of the new Metamorphic Top Coats, which then came free with your January box. Like I said before, that was my biggest reason for ordering this box.

Now to look at the individual products....

Julep Luxe Lip Conditioning Treatment in Sheer Fig
Subtle color enriched with natural ingredients that soothe, hydrate, and plump lips. A silky-smooth moisturizer that sets a new bar for balm.

Doesn't this look promising? It has a really interesting metal applicator that does help the product glide on really smoothly, but I straight up hate this. I really do. Whatever the ingredients are that nourish this skin, this looks and feels like your basic, incredibly cheap, really shiny lip gloss and that just is not the kind of product that I prefer. I don't like the thick, slippery feel on the lips at all and there's not enough colour payoff to make this look like anything other than super shine all over my lips. For me, this is definitely the loser of the box. And possibly of my entire history with Julep, if we're being honest.

Julep Gel Eye Glider in Olive
Clinically proven to last for 10+ hours of wear, this rich, creamy liner goes on smoothly and sets in 30 seconds.

I love an olive green eye pencil, I really do. That, combined with the shade of the included nail polish, was definitely what sold me on this box. I have to say, I'm not at all disappointed with this eyeliner. It glides on really smoothly with pretty good colour pay off and I see myself getting a decent amount of use out of this pencil in the future. I'd also be willing to try some of the other eye gliders in the future, because I am impressed with the formula.

Julep Nail Color in Casey
Galapagos teal crème

Guh. You guys, this is pretty. Like, really, really pretty. It's got just enough depth to it so that it is definitely a dark colour but it also maintains the colour intensity. I was really concerned that it was going to be staining, since I feel like there's something in the pigments in shades like this that really stains the crap out of your nails, but I didn't find that problem at all when I did a quick application and removal when I got it. It's just really, really pretty and I love it... But it's even prettier when you pair it with....

Julep Metamorphic Top Coat in Tilda

I couldn't find an official description of this product, so I'll just make one up. This is a shimmer, color changing top coat that can be used to transform any number of different polishes. There were three different shades available in this formula - a blue shade, a purple shade, and the green shade that I recieved. Thje shade I received is called Tilda, which is a green shifting shade with hints of a kind of coral in there. It's really beautiful and it pairs absolutely stunningly with Casey for that kind of mermaid nails look. I've had top coats like these in the past, so they're not exactly a new thing, but I absolutely love them when they're done right because they're really versatile and can be used with a lot of different shades. To be honest, I'm really looking forward to trying this over a white or cream shade sometime in the near future.

I would have nail swatches... but my nails are kind of jacked and I can't find my nail swatch wheels because I own too many things, I think. Anyway, trust me when I tell you that these polishes are both top notch.

Overall, I'm still pretty happy with this box even with the crushing disappointment about the lip product that I will never use and don't even have anyone in my life to give it to who would like it any more than I do. They eyeliner and the polishes make up for it and I am a happy camper.... I think I might have to stop skipping so much in the future.

I hope you're all having a great day and thanks for reading!
