REVIEW: NYX Micro Brow Pencil in Taupe

by - June 24, 2015

Brows are the thing right now, right? I don't know about you guys, but I'm pretty much obsessed with my brows lately and have a collection of brow products that I should probably be ashamed of. However, I've been waiting to get my hands on this product since I first saw it circulating on Youtube when every Youtuber and their dog got gigantic bags of NYX swag at IMATS. Just to look at it, everyone can see that it's looking a lot like a dupe for the Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz - which is my HG brow product in spite of its price tag - but looks aren't the reason that the ABH Brow Wiz is amazing, so the proof is really in the pudding on this product. I've been trying this out every day and I'm definitely ready to give my thoughts!

So... keep reading!

From NYX:
What it is: A micro mechanical brow pencil that shapes, defines and fills in sparse brows for a natural look.
What it does: Create a more defined brow by filling in areas that may be sparse or over-tweezed.
Why we love it: The super-skinny tip draws ultra fine lines, allowing you to create the look of natural brow hairs.
How to use: Use short strokes to define the brow and fill in any sparse areas then soften edges using the spoolie end.

First off... This pencil comes in 8 shades (Blonde, Auburn, Chocolate, Ash Brown, Brunette, Espresso, Black, and Taupe), which means that I'm pretty sure everyone can find a shade or a mixture of shades that will suit their brow color and skin tone. One of the biggest complaints I hear about brow products is that they don't come in enough shades to suit every hair color, so this is an important thing to mention. I chose the shade Taupe for my eyebrows both because it tends to be quite universal, but also because my brows always look best with a very neutral, mid-toned brow shade. For comparison, my shade in the ABH Brow Wiz is Medium Brown (which was formerly Medium Ash), and these two shades are quite similar in appearance in the brows.

The package is dual ended, with one side containing the product and the other containing a small, tightly bristled spoolie. This is my favorite format of brow products recently. I really enjoy the ability to get soft, small strokes in the brows that can give the appearance of naturally fuller brows when used correctly. I also like the addition of the spoolie, since I always like the appearance of my lashes if I brush them out with a spoolie both before and after applying the pencil.

The texture of this product is quite waxy and a little bit dry, which I think translates well to both getting a good inital application of the product as well as maintaining that look through the day. I have noticed a little bit of fading later in the day with this product, but not to the point where I lose the overall groomed and perfected look of my brows.

My overall feelings about this product are overwhelmingly positive. I wouldn't say that it's an exact dupe for the ABH Brow Wix, but it is absolutely the closest I've found (in a rather extensive search) in both packaging and performance. I think that this is probably the best eyebrow product I've found at a drugstore price and I will definitely be repurchasing in the future. In all honesty, I'm tempted to run out and pick up a backup right now - just in case.

The only retailer in Canada where I've seen this product is London Drugs, but I'm sure it'll be popping up in other retailers that sell NYX products sooner than later!

Thanks for reading!
