REVIEW: CoverGirl Clean Matte BB Cream

by - June 08, 2016

Honestly, I have to admit that I don't know what made me pick up the COVERGIRL Clean Matte BB Cream For Oily Skin. The thing is... I don't have oily skin and products that are advertised as being matte can be a big problem for me. However, my skin gets a lot shinier in the summer months and I'm finding that since I take care of my skin so well and with so much hydration these days, I actually can get away with using a matte base product. I suspect that it might have been something to do with how much I absolutely love the COVERGIRL Ready, Set, Gorgeous Foundation, which comes in similar packaging to this one, that had me taking the change and picking this up. Seemed like it was worth a try... But was it?

ABOUT:
COVERGIRL Clean Matte Makeup is the good-to-skin makeup with lightweight coverage that lets skin breathe and controls unwanted shine. Our complete line of Clean Matte makeup has extra-fine oil absorbent powders that won’t clog pores, and helps give you a clean, shine-free face.

Honestly, I have to say that squeeze tube type packaging actually might be my favorite packaging for foundation - even over a pump. This is for a couple of reasons. The first is that it's convenient. I can toss a tube into my on-the-go makeup bag no problem just in case I need it throughout the day. The second is that I can easily get use out of all of the product inside and I always know pretty much how much I have left. And the third is that I have more control over how much product I dispense, so I don't end up wasting product.

Clearly, I am good with this packaging!

One thing that drew me to this is that it's a BB Cream that specifically says it won't clog pores. What I've found, unfortunately, is that most BB Creams do break me out. For a long time I didn't know what it was and I absolutely loved the ease of a BB Cream as a part of my daily routine - and then I realized exactly what was breaking me out. I had high hopes for this product though - and since I've been trying it out I haven't noticed any new breakouts or clogged pores, so I'm calling it a win on that note.

Another thing that it claims is that it'll last all day - and that's a pretty huge claim for a lot of people when it comes to their summer skin, but I was honestly blown away with the staying power on this. The first day I was testing this BB Cream, I wore it for 14 hours straight on a pretty hot day and I stayed matte throughout the day and the foundation looked essentially flawless without having to blot or powder my skin at all. It really does set on the skin - and quite quickly. I would recommend applying this to parts of the face one at a time to ensure that nothing is going to set before you have a chance to blend it.

I really do think that this product is living up to the claims it's making in a way that really impresses and surprises me.

Another thing that surprised me about this product was the coverage. While most western products, particularly in North American drugstores, that advertise as a BB Cream tend to be very sheer and more like a tinted moisturizer, this product gives solid medium coverage to even out the skintone really well. I still needed to use concealer on a couple of blemishes and under my eyes - but that's true for pretty much every foundation product that I use. One thing that I will say, though, is that I don't think for me that this is a very buildable product. I think it looks best when you apply one thin layer all over the skin and then spot concealer, because when I tried to build it, it did get a little bit cakey in places like around my nose and between my eyebrows.

Honestly, you guys, I can't even tell you how impressed I am with this product. It lives up to the claims that it makes as far as being long wearing and not clogging pores, it has a really beautiful matte finish that doesn't look heavy or cakey (as long as you don't apply it too heavily), and it has solidly good coverage, particularly for a BB Cream. Oh, and did I mention it's affordable? Because it's really affordable.

The COVERGIRL Clean Matte BB Cream hugely gets my recommendation for anyone with normal to oily skin. If you have dry skin all year, I would probably avoid this. It's a great product though and one of those little surprises that I love to find in the drugstore!
