Halloween Makeup Breakdown ft. Dermalogica Double Cleanse Routine

by - October 31, 2017

Happy Halloween, everyone! This Halloween, Dermalogica challenged a bunch of Canadian Beauty Bloggers to create a Halloween makeup look and take it off using the new Dermalogica Precleanse Balm with Cleansing Mitt*. Since I love a good Halloween face and I'm a huge fan of a double cleanse, I was really excited to try it out.

Keep reading for my review as well as a look at my before & after Halloween look!

If you're not familiar with a double cleanse routine, I have to tell you... It's best for us regular makeup wearers. Basically you start your cleanse with an oil based cleanser, like the Dermalogical Precleanse Balm*, to break down your makeup and remove all of the stuff that is sitting on the surface of your skin. Next, you go in with your second cleanser, which will get in and actually clean the skin and leave you ready for the rest of your skin care. I've been a double cleansing addict for the past few years now and my skin absolutely loves it.

The Dermalogica Precleanse Balm*, my friends, is an absolutely gorgeous product. It's a really rich balm that melts down to an oil when warmed by the heat of your skin to break down excess sebum, makeup, environmental pollutants, and residual product buildup on your face. It contains a Natural Biolipid Complex to lock in hydration and reinforce your moisture barrier as well as Apricot Kernal Oil to nourish the skin. Can I just tell you guys... This smells and feels amazing on the skin. There's something just lush about it that makes using it feel like an experience. It comes with a Cleansing Mitt that slips on to your hand and has really gentle little nubs on it that really get in there to break up literally anything on your skin.

I decided that if I was going to put this to the test on a Halloween look, I was going to use some of the most stubborn makeup products I could to really test it. Instead of using face paint, I decided to just apply a thick layer of really light, really heavy coverage concealer for my base and I set it with a heavy dose of not-quite-translucent white powder. Next, I went in with a ton of red - on the eyes, face, and lips and applied really heavily. Red pigments can be really difficult to get off and I figured that this would test the limits of the Precleanse Balm. I also used waterproof eyeliner and brow products to finish up this look. To be perfectly honest, I don't think I've ever had such heavy makeup all over my face and it was a little bit uncomfortable, so I really wondered if it was going to come off easily.

Apologies for not including a DURING picture... the red and black smears all over my face while I used the Dermalogica Precleanse Balm made it pretty much impossible for my camera to focus and give me a clear picture.

A pea sized amount of the Dermalogica Precleanse Balm* applied to the Cleansing Mitt and removed with a warm wash cloth, a quick second cleanse with the Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel*, and about three minutes total and there was literally no trace of makeup on my face and my skin felt both clean and really nourished. I do recommend that you go in with your fingers with work away your eye makeup, since the Cleansing Mitt can feel a little bit rough on that sensitive skin, but I really, really loved the way the mitt worked on the rest of my face. As you can see from the little bit of face cloth in my after picture, it wiped it all away! I've had a lot of trouble getting Halloween makeup off in the past, so this was just beyond impressive to me.

I have to tell you guys... I'm an instant convert. I've used a lot of balms and cleansing oils in the past, but as soon as I tried the Dermalogica Precleanse Balm*, I was completely convinced. If it can basically destroy my heavy Halloween makeup in a matter of a minute or so, I have no doubt that it'll easily handle my day to day makeup. I also just loved the way that it made my skin feel. For me, because I'm pretty sensitive to cleansers that are too intense, the way a cleanser leaves my skin feeling is important and I really liked this one. I give this a huge thumbs up and highly recommend trying it out...

And speaking of trying it out....
