REVIEW: Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer

by - January 31, 2018

I feel like I'm supermuch behind the times on trying out the Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer... but I admittedly tend to be that way. I think it was either early in 2017 or late in 2016 when this product was reformulated and everyone kind of went insane for it. I actually did want to buy it back then, but the shade selection was narrower when this was first relaunched - I believe - and I couldn't find one light enough for my skin. I actually got a sample of this with a Sephora order and after trying it out a handful a times, I decided to pick up a full size.

Obviously, we have to talk about the elephant in the room - the gigantic doe foot applicator. I feel like this is either going to be a selling point or a deal breaker. For me, it's definitely a selling point. I just love that it eliminates the mess of having to pump foundation out either onto my hand or onto a palette that I will have to clean later. This way, I just kind of dot this around my skin and I'm good to blend it out. While you may have concerns about bacteria - which I totally understand - that just isn't an issue I'm too worried about since I always apply makeup onto freshly cleaned skin. Still, if that does really bother you, I suspect you might not be super excited about this applicator.

The first thing that really struck me about this foundation is how pigmented it is. When they say a little bit goes a long way, they really aren't joking. Because this is a foundation that sets, though I wouldn't say it's a super matte set, I do like to do my face in sections. I generally start with one cheek, then the other cheek, and my forehead last. I find that it works best to blend it with a sponge because it really pushes the product into the skin and gives a really even layer of coverage.

On the skin, I'd say that this is a medium to full coverage foundation with a more natural finish. It definitely sets, like I said, and I don't feel that I personally need to set my face with powder when I use this - at least in the winter. One thing that I really want to stress from my experience testing out this foundation is that everything about it is better if I use a lighter hand. Because it's super pigmented, I still get really good coverage, it doesn't look cakey or overdone, and I actually find that the wear time is better when I use a thinner layer of this. As long as I'm mindful of that, I can easily get a full 10-12 hours of wear out of this foundation. I also find that for my personal skin type, this works best when I use it along with a lightly hydrating primer.

Overall, I feel like this is a really solid foundation for my skin type, which is currently normal leaning dry. I have to say, though, that I'm not entirely sure how this would wear on other skin types, so if you're on either end of the spectrum, either oily or dry, I would recommend getting a sample of this and trying it out before investing. For me, though, this has definitely become a go to and I'm actually super excited to try it out as the weather gets warmer and my skin changes slightly.

The Clinique Beyond Perfecting Foundation + Concealer is available at counters, Shoppers Drug Mart, and Sephora and retails for $36CAD.
