NAIL ART: Blobby Neon Abstract Summer Nails

by - July 18, 2022

It was definitely a hot weekend here in Winnipeg, so I couldn't resist leaning distinctly into the neon of it all. Honestly, there's just something about July that, for me, screams for neon nails and even as I'm typing this post I find myself looking down at my nails and just getting a charge from how much I love how this mani turned out. I really love that these sorts of blobby abstract designs are so much on trend in nail art right now because not only are they really versatile and fun, but I think that they're fairly accessible to do at home regardless of your nail art skill, which is always a plus in my opinion.

Anyway, keep reading for more on how I did this mani!

As I said, I really wanted to lean into the neon of it all for this mani, so the color story really started with those. I decided to grab for two shades from the Bio Sculpture Live Life Loudly Collection* for Summer 2022. I continue to be super impressed with the performance of all of the polishes in this collection, but particularly the yellow because it's just pretty much perfection. I decided to pair yellow and coral for this mani to just entirely lean into that brightness and, of course, bring in that black to really give the contrast and impact that I was looking for. I also grabbed a black speckled topper to use instead of adding my usual corner dots with a dotting tool, but I'm not entirely sure I would do that again because I'm not sure I love how it turned out...

Anyway, I knew I had to start with a sheer base to give a wee bit of camouflage to my natural nail, so I started by applying one coat of OPI's Baby, Take A Vow to all of my nails. This is your sort of classic milky pink sheer and for my skin tone it's a solid go-to when I want my base to be nearly nude without any streaks.

Now, for the exciting part! Applying the neon polishes is honestly super, super easy. I started with the yellow on each nail and just literally laid the brush down towards the center of the nail and then applied a stripe to the tip and then repeated with the coral, with each polish being in a slightly different position on the nails. I also alternated the placement of each color to break things up a little bit. I think my biggest tip when doing this kind of nail art is to apply those blobs confidently and don't try to get too fussy with it. In the end, just sort of slapping it on works the best in this scenario. Next, I applied that speckled topper at the corner of each nail, sort of dabbing to get the (mostly) desired amount of product onto the nail.

Once the base design was dry, I went in with my stamping. I love this image from the KADS Fashion 091 Stamping Plate, which I honestly think has become a bit of a must have in my collection, and I think it worked sort of perfectly with this design when it comes to the scale and shape of it. When applying, I played around a little bit with the angle and placement of it so that it didn't look too samey on the nails, but tried to keep it towards the center of the nail for the most part.

Once I was happy with my stamping, I sealed everything in with a nail art top coat and then followed with a generous layer of quick dry glossy top coat for shine and volume. And voila!

Honestly, I've already found myself thinking about other ways I could do similar mani's to this one using different colors and stamping images, which is very much my brain's way of saying that I love this mani. (Anyone else's mind work like that? You love a thing so immediately you want more of the same thing but different? Just me?) Anyway, I love this, so don't be surprised if you see more similar mani's in the near future here on the blog!
