NAIL ART: Pastel Rainbow Spectrum Abstract Nails

by - April 24, 2023

I had the idea for today's mani when I was almost asleep one night last week, which should have ensured that there was no way I was going to end up trying it... and then it just stuck in my head and I had to figure out if it was even possible to get the look that I had in mind. This can always be an issue when it comes to actually getting a design from my imagination onto my nails, since my imagination has zero constraints. Anyway, it turned out that it actually came together really smoothly and easily and I got to, once again, utilize the new Whats Up Nails Bloominosity Collection* for something other than its intended use.

Essentially, the idea that I had for this mani was all about the base and I really wanted to create a sort of random spectrum, almost like color and light were bursting from something, if that makes sense. I decided to use the pink, yellow and blue polishes from the Whats Up Nails Bloominosity collection specifically because of the yellow. These sorts of very pale yellow polishes can be really tricky to work with, but this one has proved to be a really beautiful formula and I had no doubt that it would hold up in this design.

I started by applying a nearly white créme polish to all of my nails as my base and let that dry down completely before I moved onto the sponging. For this mani, I decided to use two makeup sponges so that I could have two different configurations of the three polishes and just alternate the direction so that each nail has a different look, although I did use the same sponge and direction for my thumb as I did on my pinkie. I did two passes of sponging per nail to get to the blend and opacity that I was looking for for this design.

As I've been doing a lot lately, I followed my sponging with a linear holo top coat in order to both smooth out the blend as well as really amp up that vibe of this being a burst of light spectrum. The holo just really sings in this context, I think.

For my stamping, I kept it really, really simple with this one image from the Whats Up Nails A026 Stamping Plate because it almost felt like sound waves to go with the light spectrum and my brain just really, really liked that. So I applied the same image, alternating both the direction and the side of the nail that I placed it on so that each nail really felt unique.

Once I was happy with the overall design, I sealed everything in with a nail art top coat and then finished with a generous layer of glossy top coat for shine and volume. And voila!

I'm obsessed. Seriously, I'm so madly in love with how this mani turned out that it has my brain wanting to figure out a million different ways to recreate the same vibe. Anyone else's brain do this or is this just another case of my brain hyperfocusing on things that it likes? Probably that. Anyway. Seriously, check out this polish collection because it's magical. It was gifted to me, but I would seriously buy backups tomorrow, that's how much I love it.
