Prairie Beauty

I hemmed and hawed on this particular Friday Forever Favorite because it's controversial, even to me. There are a couple of reasons for this, which I will get into, but I decided that since I inevitably reach for it every time I paint my nails and always repurchase it once it goops up and is unusable (CONTROVERSY!), it's still a favorite. One might say that this is a love/hate kind of favorite that isn't quite a healthy relationship. I wish I could quit you? Controversial. Moving on.

Seche Vite is one of those cult favorites in the beauty community that seems to really divide people. Most people, I think, either love it or love/hate it like me, but there are some people who are staunchly and determinedly anti. And I get that. You're not supposed to use this while you're pregnant because... I don't know... Your baby could be born with a time head? (We're instabesties if you get that reference. If not, it's all good. We can still hang.) Anyway. Chemicals. Birth Defects. I feel like things that warn you not to use them while you're with child are generally things that you maybe shouldn't use even if your womb is vacant. Still. I use this because I've found nothing that works quite as well. And I'm too old to give myself birth defects, so. This is getting weird. Apologies.

I want to talk about the pro's that keep me coming back to this product and then we can talk about the cons. The biggest and baddest pro for this top coat is the speed with which it dries. Before I found this I was notorious for destroying my nails every time due to my impatience with sitting still and not touching things. This, however, allows me to get up and do light duty within a few minutes of applying and heavy duty within an hour for sure. For me, this is huge win. The second thing is that you can apply it to wet polish and it isn't going to jack everything up. Now, there is one problem with doing this, which I'm going to get into a little later, but you can do it. Again, impatience wins out. The final big win for me is the finish. I feel like this, better than anything else in my collection, gives me that glossy, lacquered gel looking finish that I love so much. It also keeps my polish from chipping better than any other top coat that I've tried, though there's an issue with that which I'll touch on below as well.

Cons. It's weird that I'm going to have a whole section of cons for a Forever Favorite, but it can't be said that I didn't warn of the controversy. The first con is that this top coat shrinks. The severity of the shrinkage seems to be directly related to how wet the polish you applied this over was, with it shrinking more the wetter the polish was. Ultimately, I don't mind this overmuch for two reasons. The first is that it really just looks like tip wear, which isn't a massive problem for me. And the second is that it's easy enough to just file down those tips of my nails for a freshly clean finish once the polish has completely cured (about 24 hours after polishing.) The second con is that this can peel. It does really depend on the polish that you put it over, some are more prone to peeling than others, but generally with cream or jelly polishes they will peel right up after a couple of days under this top coat. Not cute, friends. However, I haven't had any problem with peeling when using this with a shimmer or glitter polish.

So there you go. A forever favorite with some significant flaws. Still, I love it and will probably keep using it until I either end up on the road to being someone's mother (which is terrifying) or until something else blows this out of the water. Not gonna lie, I am kinda hoping for the latter.

So, if you've ever read any post on this blog about brows, you've heard me talk about the Anastasia Brow Wiz. And really, this is one of those products that, if you spend any time meandering through the online beauty, you'll have heard about from countless other people. That's because it. is. great. It is also spendy, which may be why I don't use it every single day. I have a tendency to keep my spendier products for special occasions or, let's be honest, days when I look a hot mess and I need something really great to pick me up. However, this is my second repurchase of this product, because even at nearly $30 at Sephora, I feel like it's worth every single penny. I'm pretty sure I will continue to sing the praises of this brow pencil for quite some time, unless another company comes up with a product that can rival this one at a lower prince.

Keep reading for a closer look and more of why I'm obsessed with this eyebrow pencil.

I had a hard time choosing what I was going to feature as my FFF this week, which probably has more to do with my leaving it to the last minute than to not having a plethora of options. Ultimately, I ended up thinking about the things that I keep in my purse with me and rarely, if ever, take out of my purse. Of all of my lip products (and I assure you, I have a stupid collection that I should probably feel a little bit of shame for... but I don't) this is one that I always gravitate towards and it seemed the natural choice to be featured today. Also, I do like to feature products that are a really affordable price but perform in a way that you can just say that it's great, not that it's great for the price point. So without further adieu...

My preferred lip look is definitely a matte or a creamy semi-matte lip in either a deep, punchy red, berry or wine shade or a soft, subtle nude shade. While I feel like my colouring (pale skin, dark hair, blue eyes) is well suited for a deep, striking lip, it can be a lot harder to find a nude shade that suits my skintone and doesn't wash me out and make me look dead. The curse of a pale woman is the struggle to not look dead, I think. Anyway, I've found that finding a nude, matte shade can be even more difficult because formula tends to be finicky and a nude shade can definitely tend to be more flattering with a little bit of shine. But I refused to give up and then I met this one and it was love at first application.

Anyone who likes to wear a matte lip knows that the formula is the key. No one wants to spend a day wearing a matte lipstick that makes their lips feel uncomfortable tight and dry or one that's going to flake off or apply like a patchy mess. This one definitely checks all the boxes for me. Application is smooth and full colour, speaking to pretty great pigmentation, without any issues of patchiness in the finish. It's not as long wearing as some other matte lipsticks, but I still find it to be quite enduring while still feeling comfortable and non-drying on the lips. I think this might be one of the most comfortable matte lipsticks I've ever worn... and I've worn many.

For me, the best part about this lipstick really is the shade. It's a little bit darker than your typical nude, which means it doesn't get anywhere near looking like concealer, with just enough pink and just enough warmth that there's no risk of looking like you're hypothermic... or the undead. The result on me, I feel, is a lip that doesn't detract from the rest of my makeup or make too much of a statement, but instead brings a look together to look polished and complete in a way that's distinctly flattering. It really might be my absolute perfect nude lip colour. (Although it may be tied with Retsina from BITE, which is more of a cream finish but similar in tone and shade.)

One last thing about this lip colour that I think bears noting is that it does have a flavor on the lips. I can't really place it, it's sort of sweet and fruity like fruity Mentos, and I actually find it kind of pleasant. However, this is definitely not the product for someone who vehemently dislikes a flavor in their lip products.

So there you have it, another FFF in the can! Have a great weekend! XO.

I was thinking about it, the content that I put on here, and realized that I'm always so excited to write about the things that are brand spankin' or that I've just discovered but I rarely dip into my stupidly sizable makeup collection to talk about those long loved workhorse products that I love so much. So I decided to change that. Every Friday, I'm going to try and write about a product that isn't new or fancy or maybe even the least bit exciting, but that I always go back to no matter how many shiny, possible replacements the makeup industry offers me. So without further adieu, I give you my first Friday Forever Favorite....

When I was making a list of the products that I could possibly use for these posts, the Rimmel Stay Matte Long Lasting Pressed Powder was the clear winner for me. I have multiples of this product - one on my vanity, one in my desk at the office, and one that travels around with me in my purse. I've hit pan on several times on these and I always repurchase. I do try other powders, because the makeup junkie in me always has those nagging thoughts that there might be something better out there, and a few have gotten close and sometimes even tricked me into thinking they might be better, but then I use this one again and it's just everything I want it to be.

I will say that I have one complaint about this product and I feel like this is most people's complaint: The Packaging. While this works fine if you're going to be leaving your powder on the vanity, who always leaves their pressed powder on the vanity? The lid comes off. Easily. Way too easily. It's pretty clear that this wasn't designed to be a convenient compact for tossing in your purse, but that's exactly what I want it to be because this is my favorite product for those late in the day touchups when I'm feeling a little bit shiny and gross. I'm still crossing my fingers that they're going to repackage these someday soon and I'm going to get a sleek this company to toss in my bag... but I'll still keep buying it either way.

Now that we have the downside out of the way, let's talk about the upsides. For me, my biggest skin issue is uneven texture. I have enlarged pores and some small bumps and scars on my face that are probably my biggest insecurity, and I find that most foundations or bases will inevitably end up settling at least a little bit into those places of uneven texture and really highlighting them. A little dust of this over the skin is like an airbrush for me. Everything gets blurred and my skin looks perfected and smooth again. I've never found this powder too heavy or cakey, it's always just enough to give my skin a little oomph and make me feel just that bit more confident. Also, when I'm trying out less than stellar face makeup, this is a savior towards the end of the day when I start to look like a hot mess.

With a price tag that usually falls right around $5, this is not only a really solid product but it's just insanely affordable - which makes all of the ones I have hanging out in every conceivable place that I could need one completely acceptable. Right????? In case it wasn't clear, I highly recommend this product.

For reference, I am NW20 and I wear 003 Natural.

Check back next week for another installment of Friday Forever Favorites and have a great weekend!

XO.
