REVIEW: Covergirl Lipstick in 258 Honeyed

by - July 23, 2014

Lately, I've been going through a bit of an obsessive lipstick buying phase, I admit. Luckily, I've been able to contain my need for MORE MORE MORE lipstick to when they're on sale so that I can get the most bang for my buck. I picked this one up a few weeks ago after standing in front of the Cover Girl lipstick display for approximately ever trying to decide between this one and the one next to it. It was very stressful, clearly. This is the first Cover Girl lipstick that I've bought in years and I rarely see lipsticks from this line reviewed, so I wasn't really sure what to expect but I was willing to try. Let's be real, I'm always willing to try.

Keep reading for my thoughts!

You know we're going to start with packaging, because I am a packaging freak and we always start with packaging. This lipstick comes packaged in a square tube with deep purple metallic finish and the bottom of the tube has a plastic piece that displays the colour of the product. The lid snaps into place when you put it away. Overall, I think the packaging on this product is really quite impressive, to the point where I'm kinda surprised that I've never picked up a tube before. I really like the piece that displays the colour of the product, because I feel like that's a convenient way of quickly identifying a lipstick shade in the drawer. One thing that I will say about the packaging is that it really gets smudged and not-so-shiny from the oils in your fingers and the smudges and fingerprints don't seem to rub away easily. Overall, though, I'd say the packaging is a win.

I picked up the shade Honeyed, which is a warm pinky nude shade. Based on the name, I was expecting the shade to be a little more of a neutral nude shade, but I was pleasantly surprised by the pink tone. I find that with my skintone, I need a nude that leans more pink than brown or else I look washed out and deadish. I definitely think that this type of shade has become one of my absolute staples and I recommend trying something like this to any of my fellow pale girls, because I think it's pretty flattering.

The texture of this lipstick is smooth and creamy and it goes on with a decent amount of pigmentation. The finish is definitely a cream, with a little bit of a sheen to it. Because of the creamy texture, I find that the wear time isn't as good as I'd like it to be and this lipstick fades quickly,  but it is really beautiful while it's on.

NOW for the part that I really, blatantly don't like. I can't actually place what this lipstick smells like, but I can tell you that I don't like it. I think it's meant to smell nice, but all I get is a background of plastic or chemicals or something. Perfumed chemicals, maybe? I could deal with the smell, since it fades quickly, if not for the taste. I don't know how it happens, but when I put this on I get this weird taste in the back of my mouth that just doesn't seem to go away. It's almost like acidic plastic and I do not like it at all. I mean, at all.

Overall, I think this is a really pretty lipstick with a nice, smooth finish and good pigmentation. The colour is really beautiful and I think it would be flattering on a lot of different people with different skintones. The only thing that keeps me from reaching for this more often and making it an every day shade from my collection is the taste and smell. Those problems aren't deal breakers and I think I'll continue to use this lipstick, but they definitely turn me off a little bit and may keep me from running out to try more Cover Girl lipsticks.

Thanks for reading this review and have a great day!

XO.
