UNBOXING: Ipsy December 2014

by - December 15, 2014

This has been a weird month for my perception of Ipsy. First, the spoilers felt like they came out of nowhere, even though they were pretty on point for where they have been normally. I chalk that up to the placement of the weekend, which kinda messed with my whole body timing. And then I completely forgot it was coming, which I chalk up to the fact that I've had so many packages arriving recently that my monthly subscription service got a little lost in the shuffle. Either way, I wasn't waiting for this one with bated breath the way I usually am. Anyway, it arrived and it's time to take a look at the contents!

Keep reading if you're interested in what I got and a few of my thoughts on each item...

1. Coolway Boost Repair Treatment
Coolway’s Boost Repair™ Treatment provides a powerful boost of ionized amino acids and botanical extracts to eliminate damage caused by harsh chemicals and high heat tools.

If you know me, you know I love a conditioning hair mask and that's exactly what this is. I have a feeling like I'll probably only get one or two uses out of this, since it says to use 2-3 teaspoons depending on your hair length, but with a product like this that's usually enough to know if I would buy it. I don't have much time for conditioner that doesn't get it done. What I will say straight off is that I really like the way this smells and I hope that the smell lingers in my hair when I use it. I do love me some good smelling hairs. Who's with me?

2. Nourish Organic Renewing Eye Cream
Nourish Organic Renewing Eye Cream provides rich hydration to the delicate skin around the eyes. This powerful product will leave your eyes looking brighter, smoother and younger looking.

I'm actually on the hunt for an eye cream that I'll see an actual difference with... once I start remembering to use it consistently. I'm pretty terrible when it comes to that. I've gotten a few things from Nourish Organic in my time with Ipsy, one that was a body lotion that was fine performance wise but that I didn't like the smell of and one that is a cleanser I haven't actually tried yet. This will definitely get tried out a lot more quickly though, since I don't have a bunch of eye creams lying around. I've got high hopes for this one.

3. Pixi By Petra Fairy Dust
Elevate & transform your eye in a few fairy seconds with this glimmering dust. Loose pigments add a lit-up high shine finish to lids, reminding you what wishes are truly made of!

I don't like this format of eyeshadow and I probably never will. I find the sponge tips to be awkward to apply with, kind of like poking my eyes out, and the pigments tend to get absolutely everywhere. That said, I actually do really like this shade, which is called Brightening Bare. It's a warm pale nude beige shade with a satin finish that actually swatches really pretty. I'm not sure if I'll use it that often, just because I find the format so inconvenient and annoying, but I feel like it would be beautiful blended out all over the lid for those no-makeup-makeup days. Like today, when I am feeling all kinds of sick coming on.  I'm kinda meh about it, but we'll see!

4. tarte Lights Camera Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara
Like a pushup bra for your lashes, tarte’s best-selling mascara lengthens, curls, volumizes and conditions to deliver a 330% increase in lash volume instantly. The high-performance formula is also infused with naturally-derived olive esters to help nourish and protect lashes.

So, I have an untouched tube of this at home that I got on Black Friday in the Tarte set at Sephora... I was kinda bummed that this was this month's high end product that was included for everyone. That said, it's a decent mascara and I'm sure I'll use it. I do wish that there would be more attention paid to the Tarte Gifted Amazonian Clay Mascara than this one though, because that mascara is head and shoulders above this one if you ask me. Still, it's fine.  I'm not mad. However, I will say that I hope they dial it back on mascara samples in 2015....

3. NYX Cosmetics Butter Lip Balm
This Buttery Lip Balm is addictively soft and scrumptious and perfect for adding a subtle hint of color for a naturally flirtatious pout. Apply directly to bare lips or apply it over lip liner for more intense color.

Even though I really love NYX and the Butter Lip Balms are available in Canada, I hadn't tried them yet, so I was happy this would also be included for everyone this month. I received the shade Marshmallow, which is a beige nude shade. I was kind of expecting it to smell like marshmallow, which I would have been all about, but this lip balm has a kind of fruity scent that I can't quite place. The thing that I'm most surprised about is how pigmented this lip balm actually is. I was expecting, since I received a nude shade, that this wouldn't really show up on the lips, but it really does. Even more surprising is that I actually find this shade to be somewhat flattering on me, which I can almost never say about a beige nude lip product. On the lips is feels somewhat slick and thin, but also has a very fine graininess to the formula that I'm not really a fan of. I can't speak to its effectiveness, but I'm going to keep trying it out and see how it goes.

I loved the actual bag this month, which kinda makes up for the sparkly business that was last month's bag. The shape is a little different than your typical Ipsy bag, which I like because it seems like it would hold more things, and I love that it's black on the outside with a really pretty plum zipper and lining. It also has a large plastic zipper pull with the Ipsy logo on it. Cute!

Overall, I'm kinda really just kind of neutral this month, which might actually be that illness that's creeping up and stealing all of my excitement about all of everything. It's not a bad bag by any means, but I can't muster any real excitement about it. Is what it is!

For those who don't know, Ipsy is a monthly subscription service where for $10 (plus $5 shipping in Canada) you receive a makeup bag filled with 4-5 beauty products delivered to your door. Click to sign up today!
