REVIEW: NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Soft Spoken & Vintage

by - February 23, 2016

To say I've been dying to try these would be... Well, clearly it would be an exaggeration, but the sentiment is strong. I've been eyeing up both of these shades on social media and the NYX Canada website for ages, but Soft Spoken was the one I wanted the most and it was always sold out. When these NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipsticks were literally the first NYX product to pop up in my local Shoppers Drug Mart, I pretty much grabbed them and ran to the cash register. Seriously, I was a monster who just wanted to pay and get out to my car so I could slap it on my lips. Sometimes it's those products that you've been lusting after for ages, however, that are the most disappointing... So how did it turn out?

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Soft Spoken (Mauve Nude)
Everyone went crazy for this shade - and it's really no surprise. This shade was about as on trend as you could get for 2015 and everyone seemed to go crazy for it. It's actually a little bit more brown on me than I was expecting it to be, since a lot of the swatches I saw looked more mauve, but I suspect that's a fair skin issue because I do find that a lot of these types of shades tend to pull quite brown on my skin.

As for the formula, this is quite thin and doesn't quite set the way that I was expecting it to. For some reason, I was expecting this formula to be more like some of the higher end liquid lipsticks that I've tried, but this never seems to quite set completely so it's not completely budge proof. Though this isn't budge proof, I do find that it wears quite well overall and This shade is quite opaque on the lips and looks great with just one coat, but also builds really nicely for a little bit more depth and coverage. It doesn't feel heavy or cakey on the lips at all.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Vintage (Plum with Mauve Undertone)
So admittedly, I wasn't expecting this shade to be as deep and vampy as it is, but I actually really like it. This formula is a little more sheer than I found Soft Spoken to be, but that could just be that it's more noticeable with a deep shade like this one. Like a lot of deeper liquid lipstick shades, this can be a little bit or work to get even because it does run a little bit patchy to begin with, but with a little bit of work this turns out to be a beautiful vampy brow-based burgundy. (Again, I think that my fair skin makes this pull a little bit more brown than it might on a deeper skintone.)

As you can see in the photos, this has a flat applicator that makes it really easy to get a fairly precise line, but as with most dark shades of liquid lipstick I recommend using a lip liner to start and then applying the first coat with a lip brush to get a really crisp line because it's really obvious if you wobble a little bit.

For Soft Spoke, this is one dip into the product and one coat. For Vintage, this took two dips and quite a bit of play to get it as even as I could. As you can see, Vintage can definitely be a little bit hard to work with because it is so deep and so pigmented and definitely would benefit from a lip liner. You can also see a little bit of the patchiness I spoke of.

As you can see in the swatches, on my light skin tone a lot more of those brown undertones seem to come out. I think that both of these shades are going to end up looking very different on people depending on their skip depth and undertone, so I definitely suggest giving them a good swatch (if you can) before you buy them!

Overall, these weren't really what I was expecting when I picked them up, but I'm still quite happy with the purchase. I will definitely be reaching for Soft Spoken often, as I predicted, because I think it's a really flattering every day shade, and I will likely reach for Vintage a little more often in the fall when the craving for vampy lip products comes on strong. I would recommend these for people who are looking for an affordable liquid lipstick and don't mind if it doesn't set to a budge proof finish.
