STUFF I TRIED THIS MONTH: May 2016

by - June 03, 2016

I think I'm going to have to be a little more diligent about keeping track of the products that I'm trying out each month, because I always seem to end up missing at least one product from the post. I will, however, include anything I miss in next month's post because I think these mini-reviews can be helpful. This month is pretty lip product heavy, which is really no surprise for anyone who knows my downright obsession with lippies. I also have some face products, an eye liner, and a fragrance.

So, if you want to check out what I've been trying this month, keep reading!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in Craft
Can we take a minute here to talk about hype? These were EVERYWHERE in 2015, with rave reviews everywhere you turned, and so as soon as they were available in Canadian Sephora stores, I snatched this one up. Honestly? It's not my favorite. I find the shade to be STUNNING and it applies with really nice opacity, but the formula leaves a little to be desired for me. I don't actually find it to be uncomfortable, but I find that it's not transfer proof - at least in this shade - and it tends to ball up towards the inner part of my lips as I wear it and ultimately wear off kind of weird. I'm not giving up on it, but it's definitely not my favorite.

essence XXXL Longlasting Lip Gloss The Matt in Velvet Rose
Honestly, I didn't really have the highest of hopes for this product, and it was about what I was expecting. This is a matte gloss in the way that something like the Maybelline Velvet whatevers are. It's matte in finish, but it doesn't set down, which is actually fine with me. Unfortunately, this has a weird, uneven finish to it that I think just ends up looking weird on my lips. I can't even describe it, it's just weird. This one is probably going into the pass off to a friend or family member pile.

e.l.f. Matte Lip Color in Tea Rose
Because I'm a huge fan of the e.l.f. Matte Lip Colour formula and am a little obsessed with a mauve, I'd been dying to get my hands on this for ages. Weirdly enough, I feel like the formula is different from my much beloved Natural shade. I still like it and I'm definitely still going to wear it, but it just isn't as exciting to me as the other shade. If you're looking for an affordable matte nude in the drugstore? e.l.f. Matte Lip Color in Natural, seriously. But this one is nice too.

Clarins Instant Light Lip Comfort Oil in Red Berry
This is actually the first lip oil I've ever tried, and I think it has me excited to try more. This has a red tint that gives a nice juiciness on the lips, though the color is definitely very sheer. It really does remind me of a sheer gloss, but I actually still like it - which is kind of weird for me. It just feels good on the lips, not too sticky, and smells like cherry candies.

Garnier BB Eye Miracle Skin Perfector in Fair/Light
So. This is fine. I think it has good coverage under the eyes and wears well throughout the day. I also love the rollerball applicator because it's cooling and depuffing under the eyes. Unfortunately, this falls into the fair girl curse in that it's way too dark for me to want to reach for it for under my eyes. It's not too dark to match me, but it doesn't give me the brightening that I like in that area. Sigh.

e.l.f. Studio Tone Correcting Powder in Cool
So I've been using this old standard from e.l.f. as a finishing powder lately and I really, really like it in that capacity. I honestly can't say whether or not it does any actual colour correcting on me, but I think it very subtly ensures that my skintone looks even and all of my base colour products are seamless. For me, that's exactly what I bought this product for, and it works very, very well in that capacity.

STARLOOKS Luxe Longwear Mechanical Eye Pencil in JET
I was pretty bummed to get a Starlooks eyeliner in a recent Ipsy bag, because I've gotten them before (hasn't everyone?) and they just never worked out for me. Luckily I decided to give this one a chance, though, because I'm a little bit in love with it for tightlining. This pencil is VERY creamy and applies smoothly without having to work too hard in my tightline. I also find that it lasts really well, is VERY black, and I haven't noticed any significant smudging. When I want a black pencil liner lately, this is the one I reach for.

RiRi by Rihanna Fragrance
So, I was gifted this sample of the RiRi by Rihanna fragrance at an event and I didn't really have the highest of hopes for it, but was willing to give it a shot. Well, colour me wrong. This is a really lovely summer fragrance, with crisp floral and fruity notes. I'm crap at describing scents, but I feel like this one is feminine without being too girly and bright without being cloying. Does that make sense? I think it's a great daytime summer fragrance!

Elizabeth Arden SUPERSTART Skin Renewal Booster
So apparently you're supposed to apply this before your serums and moisturizers to boost the effects of them? Maybe? I believe that's what I read and that's how I've been using this. Honestly, I didn't see much difference in the way that my products performed, but this could be something that you'd need to really put the actual time into testing to see if it makes a difference and you just can't do that with a deluxe sample. It feels nice, I'll give it that, but it's somewhat forgettable to me.

Overall, I feel like this is really a split bag this month as to finding things I like as well as things I don't like. I think my favorites of the products I've tried this month are both of the products from e.l.f., the Clarins Lip Oil, and the Starlooks eyeliner.
