REVIEW: MyChelle Dermaceuticals Sun Protection Products

by - March 27, 2017

With longer days and warmer weather on the horizon, I think this is the time of year when a lot of us really start thinking seriously about sun protection. Personally, because I use some pretty strong actives in my skin care that make it more sensitive to UV, I use an SPF every day, but I know it's doubly important as we get into spring and summer because I have significantly more sun exposure. Recently, I've been testing out the new MyChelle Dermaceuticals Sun Protection Products and I definitely think these are worth taking a look at!

Keep reading for more!

I really feel strongly about sun protection - just ask my boyfriend about how often I harass him about protecting his skin - and I love sharing options for sun care with you guys, so I was really excited to get to try these out. I feel like there really is a formula for everyone in this bunch, so let's get right into it!

MyChelle Sun Shield Unscented SPF 28 Broad Spectrum*
Unscented, mineral-based, full spectrum sunscreem with soothing Aloe and Vitamin E to help reduce signs of sun-induced irritation. Lightweight daily protection absorbs quickly for a smooth, clear, and matte finish.

This is listed as being for normal skin types, and I would say that's accurate. This formula is a combination of 11.6% Zinc Oxide and 0.67% Titanium Dioxide to provide physical SPF and also contains Aloe and Vitamin E to soothe the skin. Of the three lotions that I'm going to mention in this post, texture wise this is the one that sits somewhere in the middle. It's smooth and not too heavy, but it has some richness to the formula that feels quite hydrating. On the skin, this really does blend in without any white cast and leaves behind a very natural, hydrated matte finish. I wouldn't say that this is a mattifying product so much as it doesn't add any shine to the skin.

This is definitely most likely going to be the one of the three that I'm reaching for consistently during the warmer months, because it sits well on the skin and has a good amount of SPF for every day wear under makeup.

The MyChelle Sun Shield SPF 28 Unscented contains 68ml of product and retails for $20CAD.

MyChelle Replenishing Solar Defense SPF 30 Broad Spectrum*
Zinc Oxide provides clear, mineral based UVA/UVB protection to prevent premature aging and hyperpigmentation. Red Algae Extra and nourishing Kukui Oil help to restore moisture balance and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A titanium dioxide free option.

This is listed as being for anti-aging, and I definitely think that shows in the texture of the product. This formula contains 13.5% Zinc Oxide for physical SPF and also contains Red Algae Extract, which contains antioxidants and natural UVA filters. This is definitely the richest of the three textures, which I chalk up to the blend of Kukui and Macadamia oil in the formula, and I find that it is definitely the most hydrating. Once this sets, it definitely has a more luminous look on the skin without adding a greasy look or feel, which I definitely appreciate.

For me, personally, this is definitely the type of SPF that's going to be most suited to me when my skin is drier and I would definitely recommend this one for dry or mature skin types and suggest that oilier skin types choose a different product from the line.

The MyChelle Replenishing Solar Defense SPF 30 contains 68ml of product and retails for $28CAD.

MyChelle Daily Defense Cream SPF 17 Broad Spectrum*
Moisture-quenching hydration and nourishing bioactives combine with Zinc Oxide to protect against free radicals and help prevent premature aging in one step.

This is listed as being for normal skin types and has the lightest texture of the three products. This formula contains 7% Zinc Oxide for physical SPF as well as Astaxanthin and Beta-Glucan, which are both naturally derived antioxidants that protect and soothe the skin. For me, this is definitely an every day type of SPF formula. Its light texture blends seamlessly into the skin, adding light hydration and protection in one step, and it lays really well underneath makeup. Because this is a lower SPF, I feel like this is one that I'll be choosing for days when my sun exposure will be limited, such as weeks days when I really only travel to and from work in the car.

Though this is listed as being for normal skin types, I actually think this is the formula that's going to be the most universal. I think that this might not be matte enough for an oily skin type, but I think everyone from combination to dry could get every day use out of this.

The MyChelle Daily Defense Cream SPF 17 contains 35ml of product and retails for $23.50CAD.

MyChelle Sun Shield Clear Stick SPF 50 Broad Spectrum*
Mineral-based, water-resistant sunscreen glides on smoothly and dries clear to deliver powerful UVA and UBV spectrum protection. Avocado, Jojoba and Vitamin E oils moisturize and protect the skin. Perfect for on the go.

This is also listed for normal skin types and I would say that's accurate as well, though I wouldn't use this as a daily SPF. This formula contains 17% Zinc Oxide as well as Avocado Oil and Cocoa Seed Butter for hydration. For me, this is a beach day type of SPF. I love that it comes in a stick that's really easy to throw in my beach bag and reapply on the go, because I do genuinely hate applying SPF lotion to my skin when I'm already out at the beach. When first applied to the skin, this has a bit of a white cast, but I've found that as I rub it into the skin it quickly becomes completely clear. While not a heavy or thick formula, I would definitely say that this is the richest of all the ones I've talked about here, and also that it leaves behind quite a luminous look to the skin. My favorite part of this? Yummy, yummy cocoa butter smell!

Because this contains Cocoa Seed Butter, I wouldn't recommend this to people with acne prone skin as it can be quite comedogenic, but if you've got dry to very dry skin or aren't prone to breakouts I think this would be a great beach/pool day SPF. Because I am prone to breakouts, particularly from SPF products, I will personally be using this for my neck, décoletté and hands - all areas that have a tendency to get missed.

The MyChelle Sun Shield Clear Stick SPF 50 contains 15ml of product and retails for $12CAD.

Overall, I'm really impressed not only with the formulas of all of these products, but also with the fact that they have so many options of different formulas for different needs. I also find these products to have a really good ratio of affordability to really great ingredients, which is always a plus for me. As the weather gets warmer and the days get longer, I would definitely recommend checking out MyChelle Sun Care products!
