SWATCH & REVIEW: Color Club She's So Vamp Collection 2020

by - November 04, 2020

When I first saw pictures online of the new Color Club She's So Vamp Collection for Fall 2020, I was intrigued and a little bit apprehensive. I don't think I've ever seen any brand go absolutely all in on a collection of very, very deep shades in the way that Color Club did with this collection and I figured it was either going to be brilliant or highly disappointing. Even once I had them in hand and could look at the bottles, I really wasn't sure that this was a collection that I was going to be into... but I went for it anyway because I really wanted to swatch them out and I figured that sharing them here on the blog would definitely have some value to people who, like me, aren't quite sure how to feel about this collection.

In the description of this collection on the Color Club website it says, "If you’re not feeling quite so sunny, Color Club's newest collection of 6 vamp shades is for you!" And, I mean, at this point in time, 2020 definitely has me feeling not so sunny so... good timing? All of these polishes also promise 2 coat coverage with a glossy finish.

Born Wicked
Color Club | She's So Vamp Collection | Fall 2020
I would describe this shade as a blackened grape, definitely a very neutral and ashy purple shade. It's a bit of a stainer, so I do recommend using a base coat with this shade and being a little bit careful when you remove it because it's so, so pigmented. On the first coat, this gave me smooth, even coverage and was almost opaque but did require a second coat to get to the full opacity and density I was looking for. This is the first one I applied and I was immediately impressed with the fact that it had that intensity of depth and was a little bit darker on the nails than in the bottle but still maintained a distinctly purple colour.

Creep It Real
Color Club | She's So Vamp Collection | Fall 2020
I described this as a blackended navy blue and in my notes I jotted down that it felt almost like a dark denim kind of a shade. On short nails, I think this could easily be a one coater, but on my longer nails I found that I even though I got really great coverage on that first coat I did need a second one for full, dense opacity. Application on this one was really, really easy and smooth and I didn't experience any staining with this one. This shade is also very, very true on the nails to what you see in the bottle and didn't really deepen up on me as it dried.

Darker Than My Heart
Color Club | She's So Vamp Collection | Fall 2020
I would call this shade a blackended cranberry and in my notes I jotted down that this has a really even balance of red, purple and brown in it. This shade definitely had the most intense staining in this collection and I would recommend strongly that you use a base coat under it and try to remove it in one swipe as best you can. This is another shade that could easily be a one coater on short nails but did need a second coat for the coverage I was looking for. This one also ends up being a little bit darker on the nails than it was in the bottle, but still maintains colour.

Gloom And Doom
Color Club | She's So Vamp Collection | Fall 2020
I honestly wasn't sure how to described this, but I'd say that it's a blackended olive brown shade that really walks that line between green and brown so that you could easily say it's either and you'd be right. Of the whole collection, I think this is the shade that I think people will either absolutely love or absolutely hate. From an application perspective, this was absolutely perfect. It applied really smoothly and evenly, self leveled beautifully, and gave me full coverage in two coats. I also think this is probably the most unique shade in this collection - I don't think I've ever seen a shade like this from any brand.

Nighttime Is The Right Time
Color Club | She's So Vamp Collection | Fall 2020
I'd say that this is a blackended teal. On its own, you could easily say it looks navy, but when you look at it next to Creep It Real, you can really see a much more green tone to it. The formula on this one definitely felt a little bit different from the rest of the collection to me, perhaps slightly more of a crelly but not quite? Which makes no sense, clearly. Anyway, on the first coat this one was a little bit streaky but it actually levelled out really, really perfectly. I got super full and smooth coverage on the second coat. Of all of the shades in this collection, I think this is also the most blackened, meaning that the one that leans the most towards looking black when you're out of the light, but it's still distinctly blue.

Oh My Goth
Color Club | She's So Vamp Collection | Fall 2020
I would describe this shade as a smoky teal. While I think the rest of the shades in this collection feel blackened, this one definitely pulls more ashy and greyed than blackened to me. Either way, it's a gorgeous, gorgeous deep teal shade that, again, feels very unique in my collection and miraculously didn't stain on me. This is another shade that could easily be a one coater on shorter nails and gave me really full, dense coverage on two coats.

What I really think that Color Club managed to do well with this collection is, I suspect, exactly what they set out to do - create a super deep and dark collection that really maintains the colour range that they chose. With these kinds of blackened shades, I think you can run the risk of losing that colour and ending up with something that basically looks like a muddy dark grey, so it's really nice that even with this depth all of the shades maintain a distinct colour.

I definitely don't think that this collection is going to be for everyone, but I'm actually really thrilled that I picked it up because I think it really does bring something to my collection that I didn't already have and I know that I'll definitely end up reaching for these for nail art when I want depth without adding black. These also all have a really beautiful polish formula that applies really easily and beautifully, which is obviously really important with a créme formula.
