NAIL ART: Deep Teal Rainfall Grunge Nails

by - September 30, 2021

I'm super excited for today's mani because it uses the second polish from Black Dahlia Lacquer's NailStuff.ca Exclusive Duo, which was so kindly gifted to me from NailStuff. If you want to check out the other polish from the duo, head over to my last post to see it. It's such a gorgeous duo. This polish is honestly... so very much right up my alley, but I will admit that I initially didn't really know what to do with it. However, I just kind of went with my gut, applied it, and grabbed for a stamping plate and a couple of polishes that I thought would be cool... and it kind of worked out!

Frozen Twilight is described as a deep, smoky blue jelly polish with shifty ultrachrome flakes. Perfect. It's got a surprising amount of depth to it, both in the actual tone of it and also in the sort of pond vibe that you get from flakie jelly polishes. The flakies in this are of the violet/blue/green variety and they have a really beautiful shift asnd density to them. In most light, I find that they come through quite green, but you definitely get that shift at different angles.

They recommend 2-3 coats for opacity and I think that's really accurate. On shorter nails, I could absolutely see you getting away with two coats. On my nails, though, it didn't quite get me there on two coats so I did have to go in with a third for a really full opacity, but this formula is great because it didn't get too thick or at all gloopy on the nails at three coats.

For the stamping, I decided to go really low contrast on this one. In person, it's a bit more subtle than in pictures but the design does still show up for me. I started by applying the larger, more full coverage dot image using a bright teal stamping polish and then followed with a more ashy, muted teal/blue and a much smaller dot image for some really subtle interest to the overall design. In the end, I think this is one of the more subtle designs I've done recently, but the depth and simplicity really feels like fall for me.

Once I was happy with my stamping, I sealed it in with a layer of water based top coat. I decided, on the recommendation of the lovely proprietor of NailStuff.ca, to finish this one matte to really bring out those flakes in a different way, so I then I applied a layer of matte top coat and voila!

Being that contrast really is something that I spend a lot of time thinking about when it comes to nail art, I'm kind of surprised at just how much I love this really low contrast speckled look - but I do.
