NAIL ART: 90s Inspired Black & White Daisy Nails

by - May 08, 2023

With everything 90s having such a moment right now - seriously, the fashion makes it feel like I've gone in a time machine back to junior high! - I've been really enjoying leaning into the nostalgia. One of the prints that was sort of ubiquitous back then was the classic white and yellow daisies on a black background print. I feel like we all had something in this print back then - most likely a dress with a circle skirt that fell to or just above the knee. Just me? Anyway, I was feeling inspired by this particular slice of nostalgia for this week's #CBBxManiMonday nails, so I leaned in!

So obviously, being that this mani is inspired by such a specific print from a specific time, the color story was very much dictated to me and I really just had to choose which products I wanted to use. And to be perfectly honest, there really was absolutely no debate on which products I was going to choose. For the base, I went with the best black polish ever, in my opinion, which is Starrily's Vantablack*. This one coat black polish is so intensely pigmented that it's one that I feel like I have to be really, really careful when applying, but it has a really beautiful creamy texture and by far the most intense pigmentation of literally any polish in my collection.

For my base, I applied one coat of Vantablack* to all of my nails and let that dry down.

For the daisies, I only had one plate in my collection that had the sort of image that I wanted and I have to say... this very old, very random plate is not particularly good quality and the pickup was definitely a bit hit and miss. But with that being said, in person you really can't even notice any of the gaps in the pickup that are visible in the photos. I applied the daisy image in my favorite white stamping polish, alternating the direction of placement on each nail. The image also wasn't long enough for my nails, so I did have to sort of patch at the end, which was a little bit hit and miss as well. Once I had the daisies applied, I went in with a dotting tool and added yellow centers to each of the flowers to really drive home that classic 90s look.

Once I was happy with the overall design, I sealed it in with a nail art top coat and then followed with a generous layer of quick dry glossy top coat shine and volume. And voila!

I think this mani, while not being quite as perfect as I would personally prefer it to be, really hit the mark on the inspiration and brings back a great many memories of 90s fashion and decor items that featured this very specific print.
