Prairie Beauty

For a long time, foundation primer wasn't something that I reached for with any consistency, but recently I've really sort of fallen in love with it for giving me a really smooth base for my makeup. I've been curious about trying a balm or putty style primer for a while now, but I wasn't particularly interested in picking up the Tatcha one and the much lauded elf one wasn't available locally so I never really bothered. Recently, though, I saw a review of the Hard Candy Smoothing Primer Balm in which the reviewer said it was a little bit creamier and more hydrating than those two I just mentioned and my attention definitely perked up and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it - so when I saw it on the shelf at my local Walmart, I decided to pick it up.

You know how some brands have a type of product that you're absolutely always down to try because they've historically done it so well? When it comes to Hard Candy, that hype of product is any kind of baked powder. Years ago now they released these two limited edition baked duos, a bronzer and a highlighter, in heart shaped tins and I obsessively searched until I found them and I actually still use both of them to this day. Since then, anything baked that Hard Candy releases, I'm eager to try, and there have definitely been some hits and misses. So, of course, I was eager to try out the new Hard Candy Just Glow Make The First Mauve Baked Highlighter Trio*.

I feel like lately the internet has been really encouraging me to try out some things that I almost certainly would have passed on if not for a strong recommendation from a trusted source. While I do try a decent number of different drugstore foundations, I tend to stick to brands that have done me right in the past, but in the past year or so I feel like there have been some surprises from brands that I wouldn't have expected to really enjoy. Enter the new Hard Candy Glamoflauge Full Coverage Foundation. I think it's fair to say that Hard Candy isn't really a brand that a lot of people look to for complexion products, but when one of my favorite and most trusted Youtubers gave this one a good review and I saw that it was only like $7, I went for it.

I feel like the drugstore has really been stepping its game up when it comes to large palette releases, but when it comes to shade selection I feel like Hard Candy has been ahead of the game for quite a while now. While the formulas can be a little hit and miss for me, one thing that always has me checking out what's going on over in the Hard Candy section at my local Walmart is the fact that they're always bringing something different to the table than any of the other drugstore brands are. Recently when I saw there were new releases on the shelves, I was interested, and as soon as I saw the Hard Candy Rose Gold Look Pro Palette, there was no way it wasn't coming home with me. I mean... Can you blame me?

When it comes to drugstore priced holiday gift sets, I really think Hard Candy has always stood out as being interesting and different. I remember seeing their first advent calendars years ago, before everyone and their dog were doing an advent calendar, and I just thought it was brilliant. This year, however, the selection of holidays sets from the brand seems absolutely massive and ranges from $1.47 up to $19.97 with options at seemingly every point in between making for some great options for stocking stuffers and, specifically, gifts for teens. I was sent a few things to feature here, but I also bought a few of the sets myself because I was really curious about them and wanted to feature them in this post as well.

To see some of the sets that Hard Candy has on offer this year and to enter to win a few of them for yourself, keep reading!

Being a Canadian beauty lover, one of the most frustrating things is when there are drugstore products that are widely available and loved in the States but as yet unavailable in Canada. I know my fellow Canadians know the pain on this. One product that I've had grabbyhands for since its release is the Hard Candy Coconut Water Cooling Primer Stick. I've heard great things about it from some influencers that I really trust and it really seemed like this was a product I was going to love. Of course, as soon as I saw it on the shelf at my local Walmart I had to pick it up and try it out. I mean, right?

One thing that I've always loved about Hard Candy is how much they tend to push things and always stand out from other drugstore brands with products and packaging that are different from what else is going on at the drugstore. Recently, I had the opportunity to try out some products from their newer Spring/Summer 2017 launches and rather than reviewing all of them, I wanted to go ahead and pick my personal favorites from the collection. Here in Canada, we don't get quite as wide a range as our neighbors to the south, so there are a bunch of other new releases in the US that I wish I could get my hands on, but I definitely do think there are some winners from the Canadian launches.

I've been a fan of corrector under my eyes for quite some time now, but the ones I tend to really like can often be at a high end price point and are often packaged in a pot, so I was pretty excited to see the new Hard Candy Sheer Envy Color Correct Cushion Wonder releases at my local Walmart. I decided to pick up the peach shade, but it also comes in a yellow shade and a green shade, as well as a lavender shade that I didn't see on the shelf locally. I may grab the other shades at some point in the future, but for now we're focusing on under eye brightening!

Admittedly, when it comes to the new matte metallic lip trend that's been hot the past couple of months, I've  been a combination of torn and very interested in it. If you follow me in Instagram, you may remember a post I did a while back where I had been playing with DIY matte metallic lips. If you're interested in that post, which I never got around to I admit, I'd be happy to do it so just let me know in the comments. That said, when I saw that Hard Candy were coming out with their Metallic Mousse Matte Metallic Lip Colors, I was interested and cautiously excited... and then I stalked Walmart until they had them in stock. I picked up the two shades that appealed to me most - Truffle, a mauve nude shade, and Queen Of Hearts, a berry shade - and I've been trying them out.

Since I enjoyed the other two new primers from Hard Candy so much, there was no way I could resist trying out this one as well. Touted as a primer serum targeted at pores, this made the claim that it would "smooth pores away", so I was holding it to a pretty high standard. I've been using this pretty consistently for a couple of weeks and I'm all set to tell you guys what I think!

I feel like new mascaras are constantly coming out in the drugstore. Maybe it's because I have a truly ridiculous number of mascaras on the go, but I find that they're the products that I'm least likely to pick up. I've gotten very mascara picky over the past couple of years and so I tend to stick with the ones that always get it done for me. However, as I was looking over the new products from Hard Candy, I noticed that there were a couple of new mascaras in the mix and the Big Fat Lashaholic Mascara jumped out at me for some reason, so I picked it up! I've been really putting this to the test for the past couple of weeks, and I'm ready to give a review!

Since the Hard Candy Brows Now brow gel is one of my favorite things from the whole Hard Candy line, there was no way I wasn't going to be picking up the Brow Ink 24 Hr Brow Stain to try out. This is definitely quite different than most other brow mascaras that I've used in that, as far as I can tell, it's not really intended to provide hold or build volume, but is instead meant to be a tint. Kinda interesting, right? I've heard about these types of products from Asian brands, but I don't think I've ever seen a North American brand do one - Let me know if there are other brands that have this type of product!

If I were to name the top drugstore makeup trends for spring 2015, it would probably be a tie for the top spot between liquid lipsticks and contour products. I swear, they're blowing up and every brand seems to be releasing their own version. Because I'm vaguely obsessed with drugstore lip products, I've been grabbing them like crazy whenever I see them. This is why, of course, I couldn't resist picking up the Hard Candy Velvet Matte Mousse Lip Color in Cherry Blossom as soon as I saw it at Walmart. And by as soon as I saw it, I mean that I saw the box full of the new Hard Candy products waiting to be unpacked and I rummaged through it like a fiend. Is that bad? Anyway, I've been trying this out and I'm definitely ready to let you know what I think of it.

I love new collection time, you guys already know this. One of the brands that I always look for new products from is Hard Candy. Why, you ask? Because I feel like they're constantly bringing out items that are interested - and for me, as a beauty blogger and all around beauty lover, that's definitely a draw. I love the usual items, but I also love when brands do something a little bit different from what else is going on at the drugstore. Now, one thing that I'm a little bummed about is that the new products from Hard Candy are at a bit of a higher price point here in Canada than they used to be, which I suppose has to be chalked up to our falling dollar. Still, I think with pretty much everything being under $10, this is still a good go to brand to try new things from. I recently picked up a bunch of new products from the brand, including the Sheer Envy Hydrating Primer Mist and the Sheer Envy Lift & Firm Primer as well as a couple of other products that I will be reviewing soon.

2015 was the year of a cheek product obsession for me. My collection blush, bronzer, and highlight got a little bit out of control and I had to give away a bunch of my blushes to make room for all of the new things that were coming into my life. I finally found a couple of bronzers that work on my skintone and don't look muddy and also figured out how to wear highlighter in a way that doesn't exaggerate the uneven skin texture that I have on my cheeks. Overall, it was a great year for cheek products for me and I could do one massive collection post to rave about all of the things that I love, but when I narrowed it down to 5 they all seemed like a really good fit. Again, I feel a little bit bad about including a couple of limited edition products in here, but it had to be about what I love, right?

At this time of year, it seems like everywhere you look in the online beauty space, there's amazing and beautiful gift sets. Of course, a lot of those gift sets are of the high end variety and, as beautiful as they are, it's hard to justify the purchase of all of the ones that we all want. Along with all of the high end goodies, there are actually a lot of great drug store holiday sets that just aren't easily attainable for us Canadian girls. It was with that in mind that I decided to do a little looking around and see what we do have. During a trip to Walmart earlier this week, I noticed that they really had some adorable sets from Hard Candy out on the shelves, so I decided to do a little bit of research and I found that there are a TON of kits out there from Hard Candy this year and I decided to share them.

(These are the Canadian sets at the Canadian prices, but I believe that they're pretty much the same in both price and packages at US Walmarts as well.)

I really do love when Hard Candy comes out with new products, because there's always something I want to try, and even though I wasn't planning on picking up any makeup on this particular trip to Walmart I had to buy this as soon as I saw it. In truth, I actually picked up every shade but I managed to restrict myself to just one so that I could get a feel for the formula. If you haven't checked out what's new from Hard Candy in the past month, I highly recommend a trip to Walmart to check out the display. Also, there have been some great blog posts from other bloggers about some of the new products recently, so a little Googling could be in order. Anyway, on to the review of this particular product, shall we?

I saw a review of this product last night on Youtube and I have to say that I was really surprised at how the Youtuber felt about it because it was actually quite different to how I feel about it. You guys know that I have a special affection for Hard Candy. I don't love everything that they do and I definitely feel like there are some duds in their collection, but I've definitely found some real gems that I use pretty consistently. One of those is the limited edition Baked Highlighter and Bronzer hearts that they put out over the summer, so when I saw these new Baked Illuminating Duos on the shelf recently, I knew I had to grab one to try. I chose the lighter, less shimmery appearing of the two options and I've been using it pretty consistently since I picked it up. Interested in my thoughts on this product? Keep reading for more...

Green mascara??? Yup, green mascara! I've actually been tiptoeing more and more into colored mascaras recently and I have a pretty decent little collection going. For me, summer is the time to play with a bright pop of color on the lower lashline and there limitless possibilities to the looks you can create with those bright pops. I suppose Limitless Lime is a great name for this shade in that case, isn't it? Honestly, I wasn't entirely sure what to make of this when I first opened the tube and got a look at it, but all it took was a little creativity and I figured out exactly the best way to use it for me!

Finding a good matte palette in the drugstore can be a bit of a pain. I think more and more brands are starting to pick up on the matte trend, but it's a much harder formula to do well than you standard shimmery eyeshadow and I've found that most of the matte eyeshadow palettes that I've come across have been pretty lackluster. I forever hold out hope though! Enter the Hard Candy Top Ten Trendsetters Palette in Birthday Suit*, which is an all matte palette with a very neutral color story at an incredibly affordable price. You guys know I needed to have this in my life! But how does it measure up?
