REVIEW: Garnier clean+ Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser*

by - March 05, 2015

You would think that I would have figured out my perfect cleansing routine by now, but I'm still constantly on the hunt for the perfect combination of products to get my skin really clean but keep it from being tight and squeaky. It always seems to go one of two ways for me. I think cleansing is one of the most important parts of your skincare routine, and that if you aren't giving your skin a thorough cleanse - especially after wearing makeup - none of the fancy creams and serums and 900 other skincare products that we shell out so much money on are going to really be able to do their job. Hence, why I'm consistently on the hunt for two perfectly balanced cleansers for my nightly double cleansing routine.

Today we're going to take a look at the brand spankin' Garnier clean+ Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser*, which is a surprisingly unique formula! Keep reading for my thoughts...

This product claims to remove all of your makeup, even waterproof mascara, which - let's face it - can be a hell of a claim for pretty much any cleanser since waterproof mascara is pretty much evil. (Yes, I do wear waterproof mascara about 25% of the time...) It also claims that it's going to calm and comfort skin, leaving it moisturized and protected. It's also formulated for Sensitive Skin, which means it's unlikely to irritate delicate skin. It's also approved by the Canadian Dermatology Association. Sound pretty good claims, right?

First, this product comes packaged in your pretty simple squeeze tube type packaging, which is my preferred type of packaging for these types of products. The tube contains 150ml of product, which will definitely last quite a while even with twice daily use. Packaging wise, it's very much like all of the other Garnier products that they've released in the last couple of years, and I quite like it. Something about the colour scheme and the streamlined look of t he text is very comforting to me and feels modern. I'm not really sure why modernity is a good thing in cleanser packaging, but my mind works in mysterious ways. Let's talk about the product itself, shall we?

The texture of this product actually really surprised me the first time I used it. It almost has a gel like consistency that is completely unlike any other lotion cleanser I've used before. It somehow manages to be both thick and thin at the same time... which I really quite dig. There is a slight fresh scent to it, but it doesn't smell perfumed or anything to me. It's just a soft scent. Like a cleansing oil, you apply this with dry hands to dry skin and massage it over the face to break up dirt and makeup and I find that it disperses quite nicely over the skin without having to work too hard at it.

I've tried using this product two ways. The first is alone in a streamlined skincare routine, and the second is in a double cleanse paired with all of the bells and whistles of night time skin care. I actually did find that I liked it both ways, but the routine that really won out for me was the double cleanse.

Used alone with just a moisturizer to follow it, this did a pretty good job of cleaning my skin and left it feeling supple and soft, though I might have felt like it left a bit of a residue behind. Of course, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. I woke up the next morning with skin that felt hydrated and smooth and looked really clean and fresh.

Like I said, the double cleanse was where it really shined. I used this along with a cleanser that I absolutely love because it really deep cleans my skin, but that can be a little bit drying if I'm not careful. I feel like the Garnier clean+ Makeup Removing Lotion Cleanser* really did protect my skin from any possible drying effects of that second cleanser and my skin felt deeply clean but also really hydrated and without any tightness when I was finished. Again, I woke up with skin that looked and felt soft, hydrated and fresh.

Overall, I have to say that I'm really impressed with this product. I think that it might be a little jarring to people who are used to more traditional foaming cleansers that tend to leave the skin squeaky, but once you get the hang of it I think everyone can really get something from this. I highly recommend this for anyone who is looking to dip their toe into double cleansing, because I think it's a really great place to start and get a feel for that sort of routine. I also think this would be good for anyone who struggles with dryness, because it not only doesn't strip your skin of moisture but I feel like it also protects it.
