REVIEW: Milani Color Statement Moisture Matte Lipstick in Matte Naked

by - March 12, 2015

I think most of us Canadian girls understand how frustrating it is to see new drugstore products all over social media that we aren't able to get here. For a long time now, my access to Milani has been pretty limited, with only a small display at Superstore that never included new products. Luckily, that seems to be changing. I popped into Superstore to pick up some groceries, but those trips always start with a meander through the makeup, and I discovered that they seem to be expanding the displays for a couple of brands. One of those brands happens to be Milani. I was seriously tempted to go ape on the Bella eyeshadows, which I already know are amazing, but I reigned myself in and only picked up this one lipstick - which I had been dying to try after seeing endless Youtube videos about them. So, how does it hold up?

Keep reading for a closer look.

From Milani:
Meet your matte. Your fantasy matte. The matte that not only feels great (yes, you read that right – it’s actually comfy) but also lasts for hours and has “a-mazing Instagram selfie” written all over it. Infused with grape seed extract imported from Italy, this smear-proof lip soother delivers mega color that won’t budge, even after a close encounter with a cappuccino cup.

The first thing that I absolutely MUST mention about this product is the scent. This lipstick has none of that icky chemical fruit scent that a lot of the regular Color Statement lip colours have. And thank god for that! I have a few of the lipsticks from the regular Color Statement line and they are absolutely gorgeous, but I hardly ever wear them because I just can't with the scent of them. Have no fear, these lipsticks have a very subtle, sweet cookie dough type scent that I can't imagine anyone will find the least bit offensive to the nose region.

Next, you know we're going to talk about packaging. I don't even like gold - it's kind of a thing with me about age or something - but I love this packaging. It's sleek and simple, with only the Milani logo on the tube and then the name and number of the shade printed on the bottom. Also on the bottom, the little plastic shade thingy that I don't even know what to call. I love these, they make storing and picking them out of the collection really easy, and the shade on the bottom of the tube is literally bang on to the color in the tube. The lid on this tube snaps on fairly securely and I would have no worries about tossing this in my purse, which is always a good thing. Packaging on this product wins.

I always really liked the formula of the Color Statement lipsticks, so I had high hopes for this and I wasn't disappointed. Like many of the new breed of mattes, this goes on smooth and creamy without any tugging or pulling and never quite sets, so you don't have to worry about that tight, dry feeling that can make a person want to tug off their lips. This is actually one of the most comfortable matte lipsticks I've ever worn that actually is a true matte on the lips. I have found that this has almost no transfer once it's been on your lips for a couple of minutes and it's completely kiss test approved. This also wears incredibly well, which always impresses me because I do tend to rub my lips together when I have product on and most product can't hold up to that. I really only have one small negative in terms of this formula and that's that it doesn't seem to build all that well on itself. It does have a tendency to ball up a little bit on the lips when you apply a second layer over a layer that has already set (as much as this does set). However, that's not a big problem for me, since it does wear so nicely.

Finally, let's talk about the shade. I chose this because it was the most wearable that was in stock at my Superstore and I actually have been drawn somewhat towards these more caramel toned nudes lately. Unfortunately, my skintone tends to require a little more rose tone than this shade has. I think that I can play around with different eye looks and cheek colours to make this a little bit more flattering on me, but for my fellow pale girls I don't think that this will be the first choice. That said, I think this shade will be absolutely stunning on women with deeper skintones, specifically women of colour.

Overall, I think this is a great lipstick and I will definitely be picking up a couple of the more vibrant shades for wear this summer. I find that a formula like this is great for more bold shades of lipstick, because it makes them more wearable and doesn't move around your face so you look like a crazy person.

Two thumbs up, Milani!
