UNBOXING: Birchbox May 2015

by - May 19, 2015

First off, sorry it's been so long without an update here... I had a little case of the distraction last week and couldn't muster the attention span to do... Well, pretty much anything. I'm hoping that my state of mind is going to be a little more on point this week so I can get out some good posts for you guys! The first one I've got is my May Birchbox Unboxing, which is always exciting for me. This month's box was curated by Emily Schuman from Cupcakes And Cashmere to promote her new book Cupcakes And Cashmere At Home. This month's box is very, very cute with a peachy toned geometric pattern and gold branding. Pretty, pretty. I'm finding that I'm really liking these boxes to actually store all of the samples that I have on reserve from beauty subscriptions. This one will look cute in the pile.

Keep reading to take a look at my samples this month!

Essential Elements Rosemary Body Lotion - 45ml Sample - Value $8
"Lightweight hydrator that heals dry skin and energizes with invigorating rosemary and mint."

This is a cute little body lotion with really cute apothecary style packaging. It has a very herbal scent to it that reminds me a little bit of Tiger Balm, if I'm being honest, but I actually don't mind it. I find that kind of scent to be really enjoyable as long as it isn't too nose punchy... In this case, it's a good smell.

Not Soap, Radio Joy Inducing Body Wash - 44ml Sample - Value $2.10
"This lemon-scented cleanser will brighten your outlook while you lather! Paraben free!"

Not gonna lie... I'm fully distracted by the cheesiness of how this product is described. I actually like the cheeky phrase on the bottle, but calling it Joy Enducing and saying it'll brighten my outlook is a little too far. However, I do like the sweet lemon scent and will definitely use it for those days when I shower in the morning and need a little perk up.

Number 4 Non-Aerosol Hairspray - 30ml Sample - Value $7.61
"Earth friendly, botanical-rich spray that gives you flexible hold and nourishes strands."

This has a smell that reminds me of something from the 80s. Like I have a specific scent memory attached to it and I can't decide how I feel about it. That said, I like getting hair products in subscription boxes so this will go into rotation!

LAQA & Co Sheer Lip Lube Pencil in Menatour - 2g Sample - Value $7.50 (approx.)
"A high-gloss, semisheer lip color that's perfect for spring. Bonus: It smells minty fresh!"

So, as you can see... Mine is broken. During shipping, it seems to have just fallen plop out of the tube and smushed against the lid. Unfortunate. However, I've seen a lot of pictures of other people's boxes on Instagram and haven't seen any other broken ones. The product itself is actually kind of rad, I have to say. It's a great, vibrant purple shade and, despite the description, doesn't feel sheer to me at all. It's also not high gloss. It does have a minty scent though! And not a gross, chemically minty scent but a pleasant one. I'm thrown off by the description and super bummed that it's broken, but I actually think this is a really good product.

NOTE: I contacted Birchbox about this being broken and asked if I could get a replacement. I actually got a really swift reply, which I'm impressed by. She told me that they don't have any more samples, but that she will add 50 points to my account for the trouble. Customer service win, as far as I'm concerned.

Benefit It's Potent! Eye Cream - 3g Sample - Value $8
"Lush hydrator that brightens dark circles and boosts skin's elasticity over time."

So. This smells like beer. Is it supposed to smell like beer? I've actually really enjoyed Benefit skin care products in the past and I'm looking forward to trying this out - especially since my search for the perfect eye cream continues. I'm going to try this out for a bit and I'll let you guys know how I like it!

Total Value: $29.51

Overall, I feel like this is a pretty middle of the road box for me. I'm not mad at it and there's a couple of good products in it (unfortunately my favorite product in the box was broken and I can't get a replacement, but such is life.) The box itself is very cute and will make for some good storage.

Anyone else who has been doing the subscription box thing feel like they really need to get their travel on to use some of this stuff up? BRING ON THE TRIPS!

If you're interested in signing up to try Birchbox, I'd love it if you'd use my referral link! I think it's definitely a worthwhile box. Each month you're able to do reviews of the samples you receive in order to get Birchbox points. 50 points = $5 to spend in their store, which I think is a great reward!

Thanks for reading!
