REVIEW: Physicians Formula #Instaready Full Coverage Concealer

by - February 10, 2017

In the past, I haven't had much success with complexion products from Physicians Formula - I've been a much bigger fan of their eye and cheek products, generally - but after hearing a good review of the Physicians Formula #Instaready Full Coverage Concealer, I really had no choice but to pick it up as soon as I saw it in stores. Concealer is a bit of an obsession for me and my collection is, admittedly, a little bit out of control. Still, I'm pretty much always down to try out a new concealer so... Why not, right?

First, let's talk about the packaging. The thing that struck me most about this was how much it reminded me of the packaging of one of my all time favorite concealers - the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer. When I first bought it, I wondered about the value since the container seems to be quite small, so I was really surprised when I found that this actually contains more product than the MAC one. In fact, at 0.37oz of product, this contains more than most of the concealers in my collection. Score! The only problem that I really have when it comes to the packaging of this product is the pump itself, which I find really stiff and sometimes takes some serious finger strength to depress and causes me to dispense more product than I'd like to. Still, I don't find that to be a deal breaker at all.

This product comes packaged with a sponge for use applying it, but I have to say that the sponge was a bit of a dud for me. When I first opened it, I had high hopes because it felt quite soft in its dry state and I thought it would get a good softness and bounce when I dampened it, but it just didn't. It didn't expand and unfortunately just stayed to firm for my personal tastes, so I really haven't used it since that first time.

However, speaking of the sponge aspect, I definitely have to say that I think this product really calls for a sponge to really press it into the skin and blend it out, because it's quite dense in texture and I just don't find I can get a smooth finish with it using a brush. I've tried both a pointed kabuki and a soft domed concealer brush, and neither of them have been able to get anywhere near the seamlessness that my beautyblender does with this product. I also find that pressing loose powder into the skin to really set this is important, because this is definitely a formula that absolutely, no-questions-asked needs to be set.

Like I said above, I do tend to find that I get more product that intended from this pump, so I've actually found myself highlighting my chin, nose, and forehead with what's been left on my hand because a little bit goes a long way with this concealer. Coveragewise, I am overwhelmingly impressed with this product and continually find myself surprised at just how bright and even my undereyes look throughout the day with this. This is a very thick formula, though I do find that it blends out really easily with the sponge and has only minimal creasing as long as I'm diligent about setting it.

There's one little weird thing about this product that I feel like I need to point out. I like to apply it with my fingers and then let it sit on the skin for a few minutes so that it starts to set before I blend it, and I find that after a few minutes the shade has started to adjust to my skin, which is kind of amazing to me because even though it's a really heavy, highly pigmented formula I think this helps it to be seamless.

My final verdict on this product is that I really think Physicians Formula has knocked it out of the park with this one. I'd like to see them release this in a bigger shade range, because I think that women of colour who deal with discoloration around the eyes would probably love this formula, but as per usual there are only 3 shades in this range and none of them are suitable for deep skin tones. Other than that, though, I think this product is PHENOMENAL and anyone with fair to medium skin could probably make it work easily. I honestly can't say enough good things about this concealer.
