REVIEW: Maybelline Brow Precise Fiber Volumizer

by - April 05, 2017

I feel like it's becoming a rare thing to find something different in the makeup world that isn't just a gimmick. I think that's why it took me a while to pick up the Maybelline Brow Precise Fiber Volumizer - I just didn't feel particularly confident that the little rubber toothbrush type wand would be anything more than a gimmick. It was only after hearing some really, really good reviews of it that I finally decided to give it a try and, let me tell you, I was 100% wrong about it! I picked up the shade Soft Brown, which is the middle shade, and I've been reaching for it every single day.

The Maybelline Brow Precise Fiber Volumizer is a tinted brow gel with fibres intended to both add colour and texture to the brows. It's available in three shades: Blonde, Soft Brown, and Deep Brown. It has what they call a "spoon brush" that they say delivers a no-mess, precise application. Cool.

Clearly we have to talk first about the spoon brush. I'm actually really impressed with it, which I didn't think was going to be the case. Because it's not too deep, I don't find that it holds too much product and it's easy to apply without overwhelming my brows. I also find that the little spikes do a really good job of separating and defining my brow hairs. I do find it a little bit tricky to get in there at the tail of my brows without it getting messy, but if I apply it with less pressure I find that it generally ends up looking pretty good.

When I first opened this product and saw the colour of the product in the tube, I was instantly convinced that there was no way the Soft Brown shade was going to work for my brows. The colour of the product when you look at it on the wand is a very warm brown and I thought for sure I was going to end up looking insane. Interestingly, though, when applied to the brows I think this showed up quite a bit darker and quite a bit more neutral than I was expecting. The shade was definitely perfect for me, but I would like the shade just a bit more if it was a bit lighter.

When it comes to formula, I have some pros and cons. Let's start with the things I absolutely love about this product. First is definitely the hold. One problem that I've always had with brow gels is that by the end of the day, they aren't holding my brows the way I want them to. My brows do this thing where they want to converge in the middle, the hairs at the top drifting to point downwards while the hairs at the bottom continue pointing upwards. Trust me. Not a good look. With this product, my brows literally stay in place all. day. long. Second is how much volume and texture this gives my brows. I'm not big on overly smooth brows, because while I don't want really bushy brows, I do want them to look natural. This product definitely gives me a textured, natural looking brow without being too much.

Now for the things I don't like as much about this formula. First is that it's a little bit crunchy, but I'm honestly just chalking up to being a necessity for this amount of hold and I'm more than willing to have slightly chunky brows in order to have them stay where I comb them all day. The second thing is definitely more annoying. I've definitely noticed that this product can flake a little in my brows. I don't really find that it falls down, but after this has set I'll sometimes look in the mirror and notice little brown flakes through my brows that I don't like. Generally, I can brush these away with a fingertip or a Qtip, so it's not a deal breaker, but it does annoy me.

Overall, in spite of the couple of flaws that I see in the Maybelline Brow Precise Fiber Volumizer, I'm kind of obsessed with it, if only because it really gives me the texture and hold that I've been dying to find it a brow gel and hadn't yet. At about $10CAD, I think this is a solid price point in the drugstore and if you do fit into one of the shades that they offer I think this is definitely worth trying out. If you have a real problem with the idea of a little bit of flaking, this might not be worth it, but otherwise I think it's a great product.
