NAIL ART & REVIEW: Sally Hansen + Sour Patch Kids Insta-Dri Nail Polish

by - October 20, 2020

For years now, the Sally Hansen Insta-Dri polishes have been a staple in my collection - in the drugstore they're some of the best, in my opinion, with incredible pigmentation and an easy to apply, quick dry formula. In recently years, they've also been doing some really interesting and exciting collaborations with brands that you  might not associate with nail polish, like Crayola and Jelly Belly. Their newest collaboration for Halloween 2020 is with Sour Patch Kids and I have to admit, I was kind of flummoxed and also excited by the pairing. I only picked up 3 of the shades from the collection - the most Halloween-y ones, in my opinion - and they're all créme shades, so instead of just swatching them, I wanted to do some simple nail art because... well, any opportunity to do nail art!

So, without further ado, keep reading to take a look at 3 of the shades from the new Sally Hansen + Sour Patch Kids Insta-Dri Halloween Collection!

Like I said, I only picked up three of the shades from this collection, which ultimately consists of 5 créme shades in black, orange, purple, red and green along with a white glitter topper. The glitter topper is actually kind of genius because it consists of really fine white glitters that distinctly resemble the sugar and citric acid that coats Sour Patch Kids, which might seem like an obvious choice, but is just genius, in my opinion.

Halloween 2020 Collection - R.I.P-urple
In my brain, there really is no purple that I associate more with Halloween than this kind of cool toned orchid toned purple - though that may entirely be owing to my associations between nail art and Halloween. The formula of this polish is really solid. I think you could easily get one coat opacity if you were to apply a thicker coat, but I actually find this formula much easier to work with when I apply 2 thin coats, because it can easily flood to cuticle if you're not careful. As you can see, though, it applies really smoothly and levels really well down to a shiny, dense finish.

I really wanted to keep the nail art designs fairly simple for these polishes and this one felt like it was screaming for something witchy. I first went in with this really pretty witchy design with dangly spiders on my accent nail and built from there with some witches and drips. I wanted to accent the base polish and I think the black stamping really did that. I also think this polish could be beautiful with some sort of black cat design. Honestly, this is just a really solid Halloween purple that I also think will be beautiful for spring/summer mani's as well.

Finding really great orange polishes, especially in the drugstore, can be a bit of a struggle and up until now one of the only orange polishes in my collection that I've really loved is also from the Insta-Dri line, so I was definitely going to pick this one up. I think it's kind of the perfect choice for a Halloween orange. It's a really classic Halloween orange, bright but not too bright, and nicely balanced in undertones. Again, the formula is fantastic with what could be one coat coverage but works best for me with two thinner coats, and it dries down to a really smooth, level, high shine finish. I love it.

Because this is such a classic shade for Halloween, I wanted to go in with a design that felt really classic and definitely, definitely had some Jack-O-Lanterns in it. I used three different images for this mani and I think the pairing of the rich black stamping with the classic orange base really pops. This is the kind of polish that you could really do just about anything with, including just wearing it on its own, and it would feel like a Halloween polish. That said, I have a feeling I will definitely be reaching for this next summer as well, because it has that really perfect level of brightness that just shines in the summer. Love this one, highly recommend.

Halloween 2020 Collection - Ghouls Night Out
I was actually surprised to see a black in this collection - not because it's not a staple Halloween polish colour but because there's already a black in the Insta-Dri line and it's hard to make a twist on a black créme polish - and I don't really think they did. I don't have Back To Black in my collection anymore to compare to, but from what I can remember these really do perform them same. Again, you could probably get one coat coverage from this, but I prefer two thinner coats, and it dries down to a gorgeous, super shiny and smooth finish.

Initially I really wasn't sure what I wanted to do with this polish, but then I had a lightbulb of a sort of spiderweb skittle using holo polishes and I was immediately obsessed. This shade really did prove to be an incredible base for holo polish - and I will actually probably reach for it in that capacity in the future. In the full mani picture, I couldn't quite capture how brilliant this holo turned out, but take my word when I tell you that it really just jumped off this black base beautifully. This is gonna be a workhorse polish for me, I can tell.

As with all of the Sally Hansen Insta-Dri collaboration collections, this one is limited edition, so if you want any of them, I would highly recommend running out and getting them while the getting is good. Honestly, all of these are just really beautiful formulas that I can't say enough good things about in shades that I think are just perfect for Halloween but also transition to other times of year as well.

I found all 6 shades at my local Walmart store and I've also seen them at Shoppers Drug Mart - so if you're in Canada and you're looking for them, those are the places I'd check!

Thanks for reading!
