HALLOWEEN NAIL ART: Hot Pink & Black Skeleton Scene Nails

by - October 25, 2021

Is this the third version of what was essentially the same mani? Yes, it is. Is it almost entirely inspired by mid 00s scene kids and Hot Topic? Also, yes. Am I kind of in love with it? 100% yes. This mani is definitely one of those ones that I should have marinated on a little bit more than I initially did, because this was always what it needed to be but I tried a couple of other versions before I got to this one. That said, I'm not sure that I would have gotten here without the trial and error as well as the little whispering emo kid tucked away in my head giving me ye olde Hot Topic inspiration.

Anyway, keep reading for more!

For the scene kid Hot Topic inspiration, I knew I wanted to pair hot pink with black. I considered just going straight up neon pink créme, but my mind kept going back to Jammin' In Jellies from Painted Polish. On its own, this polish didn't have the bright punch that I was looking for, so I decided to start with one coat of a neon pink créme from Color Club (my go to neon créme formula) and then added two coats of Jammin' In Jellies to create both depth and texture to my base. It's definitely a more subtle look than some more high contrast flakies, but I definitely think that the jelly texture and the flakies add a good bit of dimension to this base.

The image that really overall inspired this look was the text "Queen Of The Halloween Scene", which just 100% took my brain to the scene kids of the mid to late 00s, so I knew I was going to build this mani around that. I decided to use the full coverage skull image pictured above for two of my nails as the sort of anchor for the design. I really, really like this image but I actually did try it as a full mani on all of my nails and it felt like it was simultaneously too much and not enough, so I figured that two nails would be a better fit. I also decided I really wanted to use this cute little single image that straight reminds me of a skeleton onesie that, again, really leans into the Hot Topic inspo.

Once I was happy with my stamping, I went in with a layer of nail art top coat to seal in the design and then followed with a generous layer of quick dry glossy top coat for shine and volume. And voila!

I am honestly so, so in love with this mani and it takes a bit of the sting off the fact that it took three tries of basically the same design to get to the one that got the job done. I feel like the pairing of hot pink with black wasn't really on my Halloween radar and I really had no idea I would be reaching for this particular polish during this 31 days of Halloween nail madness, but it works.
