HALLOWEEN NAIL ART: Shifty Glow Ouija Board Nails

by - October 15, 2021

I have to admit, I tried some version of this mani not once but twice before I landed on this one and both times I hated the end result and almost gave up entirely on my plan to do some Ouija board nails this Halloween season. However, for some reason that I can not even fathom, the base polish for this design popped into my head as I was sipping my coffee and I knew that I had to try pairing it with some black stamping from the Maniology M071 Stamping Plate, and I'm kind of obsessed with how it turned out.

China Glaze's Sin-Derella is one of those polishes that was from a limited edition Halloween collection years ago and I picked it up because... obviously it's absolutely stunning, but now it lives at the back of my drawer and I pretty much never remember it exists or reach for it. Anyone else have those polishes? It's gorgeous, though, with a taupe base and this stunning pink/red shifty shimmer that sort of pops up from the background like, "Look at me!" If you too have this in your collection, sitting at the back of a drawer, this is your sign to pull it out and put it on because... alksfjalfa IT'S SO GOOD.

For this mani, I applied two coats of Sin-Derella to all of my nails and let them dry down.

Admittedly, what I think was tripping me up on my first couple of tries with this design is that this plate... is a little bit tricky for creating a cohesive ouija design. I don't know, maybe other people have had an easier time than I did, but it was a bit of a struggle until I came to this design plan. For my pinkie and first fingers, I used opposing ends of the letters from the ouija board, which I think really grounds the design, and I also added some really subtle taupe stars between the letters to sort of fill in the image without getting too busy. For the ring finger and thumb, I used this full coverage image that's honestly kind of perfect and could easily be a full hand mani. Finally, for my middle finger I went in with several different images including two planchettes, a moth, a bat, and a scattering of stars. Essentially, I created my own full coverage design that I tried to make really cohesive using some of the smaller images on this plate.

Once I was happy with the design, I sealed it in with a layer of nail art top coat and then I finished with a generous layer of quick dry glossy top coat for shine and voila!

I'm really, really glad that I gave this design one more go - and even moreso that I remembered I owned this base polish, which I just absolutely love. (If you can find a bottle in a destash or something, I highly recommend it. It's so pretty.) It definitely took some trial and error to get good use out of this plate for the Ouija board design, but I think it was worth it in the end.
