REVIEW: Hard Candy Velvet Mousse Lip Color in Cherry Blossom

by - March 11, 2016

If I were to name the top drugstore makeup trends for spring 2015, it would probably be a tie for the top spot between liquid lipsticks and contour products. I swear, they're blowing up and every brand seems to be releasing their own version. Because I'm vaguely obsessed with drugstore lip products, I've been grabbing them like crazy whenever I see them. This is why, of course, I couldn't resist picking up the Hard Candy Velvet Matte Mousse Lip Color in Cherry Blossom as soon as I saw it at Walmart. And by as soon as I saw it, I mean that I saw the box full of the new Hard Candy products waiting to be unpacked and I rummaged through it like a fiend. Is that bad? Anyway, I've been trying this out and I'm definitely ready to let you know what I think of it.

Keep reading for a closer look!

As you can see, each of the Velvet Matte Mousse Lip Colors come packaged in their own little tin. While I do think this is unnecessary, I have to say that I'm a little bit in love with it. The packaging of the tin is absolutely beautify, with a kind of watercolor look to it, and inside the tube is nestled in. The actual tube is really pretty as well and, to me, has a much more high end look than I was expecting. One thing I have to say I kind of love about the packaging is the fact that I can pull out the little insert and use this to toss whatever liquid lip products I want to take on the go with me in my bag and I have the good sized, good quality mirror with me wherever I go. So yes, it may be a little unnecessary, but it's kinda great.

Another thing I really like about this product is the actual applicator. I've been finding that more and more companies are going with a longer, flatter applicator for their liquid lip products, and I'm loving it. A traditional doe foot, for me, just doesn't apply the product with the precision that I need from a really pigmented liquid lip product, so having the longer, flatter applicator makes for much smoother application.

Now, for the product itself. There are some pros and cons for me. As seems to be the trend with "matte" liquid lipsticks from the drugstore, this doesn't completely set and will maintain some moisture and slip as you wear it. That said, this definitely sets more than a lot of others that I've tried do and I don't find that I have a problem with it bleeding or moving around on my lips. It does transfer, but I've found that it still maintains a lot of pigmentation on the lips and is quite long wearing. Speaking of pigmentation, this product is very full coverage and high colour on the lips, which gives it a lot of impact even with a colour that is quite wearable. With the shades that might be a little more intense and edgy, I would say that they're likely not for the faint of heart. Cherry Blossom, however, is a very pretty, wearable shade that I think would be flattering on a lot of skin tones. It's somewhere smack in the middle of being a rosy pink and a rosy red with a little bit of depth to it, but nothing at all vampy. For me, this will definitely be a spring and summer shade, because it does have that bit of brightness and pink.

Overall, I have to say I'm pretty happy with this lip colour. Again, I wish it would have actually set and I think a lot of people will likely be disappointed with the fact that it doesn't, but I really do love the formula once I get past that. The pigmentation and performance on it is surprisingly good. I think the packaging is really, really pretty and the applicator is very functional. If there was a complaint to be made, I wish they had a different shade selection because I think this is the only shade in the range that is really to my particular taste in this type of formula. If it did set, I would be more willing to try out the deeper shades.

Still, I think this is a good product and if it sounds like something you'd be interested in, I think it would be worth a try!
