Prairie Beauty: heroine nyc

Two years ago I did one of my all time favorite nail designs, inspired by the incredibly beautiful coats that were on display at Joe Biden's Inauguration. I mean, honestly, every skittle mani I've done since that one has been measured against it even though it was, by far, one of the simplest nail art designs I've ever posted here on the blog. I definitely had that one in mind when I was putting together this mani, keeping in mind the richly pigmented shades that I used and the contrast of the black graphic design. This mani is definitely its own thing, but the inspiration definitely did come from that time we were all in love with the coats.

So for today's Halloween mani, I did something a little bit different than what I normally do in an attempt to try to recreate a mani that was clearly done with gel polish - often a bit of a hit and miss endeavor, I must admit - but I think it turned out pretty cool. I'm a huge fan of @ashxmcgrath's work and I think her Halloween designs are some of her best, but I really wasn't sure how doing my own take on this gorgeous mani using traditional polish was going to go or if it would even work. Luckily, I think my take on it turned out pretty cool!

So I had this idea... I was looking through the stamping plates in my collection that I could pull out to use for the rest of the summer and I grabbed for the Whats Up Nails B056 Coasting To The Sea plate and had the idea of doing something with sea creatures.. Under The Sea, if you will. And then my brain was like... UNDER THE GALAX-SEA, as brains do from time to time, and immediately an idea started to form. There really is sort of something that feels... sort of the same when you think about space and the deep sea, so it kind of made sense in my head to combine the two. And this is what happened!

If you've been following my nail art for any period of time, you'll know that one of my favorite techniques is a smoosh and it's one that I always come back to. It's just so, so versatile and I feel like I can not only do a smoosh for every mood and occasion, but there's also different versions of the smoosh for different looks. For Valentine's Day themed nails this year, I knew I wanted to pull out a smoosh because there's just something about it that I love for this particular occasion.

Ever since I started doing Christmas nail art, back when I was just getting into nails and really had no idea what I was doing, I've loved sweater nails and I've done at least one or two versions of them every single year. This year, I will admit that the two I've done are a little bit more samey than I maybe intended, but I've found my favorite Fair Isle sweater style stamping image and nothing compares so it's the one I reach for. For today's mani, I changed it up a little bit from the Monochrome Green Fair Isle Sweater Nails from a couple of weeks ago, and I love love love how it turned out.

I have to admit, today's mani was the result of an intense lack of inspiration paired with some serious struggle to get to a finished product I was happy with. Occasionally when I sit down to do my nails it'll end up being a situation where every single thing is a struggle and this was definitely one of those times. I was determined though. I had a sort of loose idea of what I wanted when I started, but I couldn't actually tell you how I got from there to where I ended up. I will admit that it's not my personal favorite, but I think it turned out good and I still wanted to share it.

One thing that I've found as I've gained more experience with different nail art techniques is how to manipulate nail polish in certain ways. For today's mani, I'm using a technique that I'm pretty sure I invented - I don't think I've ever seen anyone do this before - and I feel like it's going to be a bit of a game changer for me when it comes to backgrounds for nail art. This is another mani that definitely evolved in process, but it all started with a loose idea of spooky trees and a sort of multicolored background.

As I continue on with my Harry Potter Marathon - I'm nearly done at this point - I clearly had to do another Hogwarts themed mani to continue with the back to school theme. This one came together with a few stumbles - by which I mean this is actually my second attempt at this design, with a few important alterations, but I love the way it turned out in the end. The thing that I sometimes forget - and I fully blame my neurodivergence for this - is that designs and techniques don't have to be complicated to be impactful and beautiful. I need to remember that!

I have to say, I don't think I've actually done a mani in today's dry brushing technique before - which is such a mess, but it makes sense. For a long time, I was weirdly scared of doing dry brushing, even though it may be one of the most fool proof, beginner-friendly nail art techniques out there, and then I started finding weird and significantly more complicated work arounds rather than just... slapping some polish onto my nails after scraping most of the polish off the brush. I do use a drybrushing technique for a lot of my abstract designs, but even that feels very much different to this classic style. Anyway, thanks to the prompts for the Whats Up Nails March Nail Art Challenge, I just went for it?

I have to admit that I have... a very strange relationship with dotticures. For the longest time, I was sort of terrified of them, then I tried one and I loved it, but for some reason I still have an aversion to them that is entirely based on being certain I'm going to mess them up. It's a whole thing in my brain. Anyway, because one of the prompts for the Whats Up Nails March Nail Art Challenge is Dotticure, I had to go ahead and do one and as much as my brain tried to resist, I wrestled it into submission.

I feel like it's about once a year that I get the idea in my head to do some leopard print nails. They always seem to be a pretty big hit, there's about a million different variations that you can do, and in all honesty they're one of very few hand painted nail designs that I can actually pull off. The inspiration to do this mani came from the polishes I used to do it, mainly two of the polishes from the heroine.nyc Winter Wishes Collection. The polishes I chose aren't necessarily the first pairing that cames to mind for this collection, but that's sort of what really inspired me.

Admittedly, my list of nail polish brands that I want to try seems to get longer rather than shorter, regardless of how many new-to-me brands that I try out. heroine.nyc has definitely been on that list for quite a while now because every time I see someone using their polishes, the formula just looks absolutely flawless. Anyway, because my list is so long, I didn't get around to trying out their polishes until I was lucky enough to win the heroine.nyc Winter Wishes Collection in a nail art contest from @lesstalkmorepolish. I was super, super excited to get my hands on these and had a hard time waiting until they warmed up after I brought them in from the mail to open them and start trying them out on my nails.
